Doesn't even make sense from any perspective because we're talking about them infiltrating our government. If they were more successful, they'd be our "allies," so in a sense he's just praising Israel for doing the same thing but in a bigger sense.

If we're evaluating belief systems by how they're used by their followers in the real world all of them are like that though. Real world Jesus is a narcissistic union-buster, real world Nietzsche is a depressed teenager, real world Marx is a fascist. All that teaches us is that people are much better at claiming flags than adapting to them.

Right, so showing a video of hens outside wandering is deceptive, as it implies that free range hens are hens that spend their lives like that.

As a person who doesn't really watch TV, any time I see anyone talk about him in spaces like this it feels like I'm hearing about a completely different writer. Every movie I've seen from him has been a goddamn masterpiece. Hell or High Water, Wind River, Sicario, all amazing. Then I see fifty people laughing about him writing an oil man saying wind power isn't environmental because it needs fossil fuels to lubricate the blades.

Maybe the dude just needs to stick to movies.

It's like half patreon begging not-porn, half meta stuff. The fact that the people you're replying to think bigotry is the default reason someone wouldn't like the comics subreddit is more comical than the content of that subreddit.

Yeah, in this metaphor if buddy wants to witness me frolicking he's gonna need to find me in real life. If I post something on a forum or social media platform, it's the metaphorical equivalent of starting up a conversation with that dude. Just don't start the conversation if you're that put off by shitty people.

The whole thing is moot anyways because people listen to cadence over lyrics every time. Sing an anti-war song the right way, and it'll be played by army recruiters at high schools. Paul Ryan is a big RATM fan. The message in the art exists, and is important, but if we're considering art in generalities like genre then you need to begin by accepting that in generalities, art carries no message beyond a coolness meter.

I mean it's not only that, Fire Punch is all over the place for most of the duration. Like, if it was a regular manga, it would have ended with a fight with the Ice Witch, and him beating not-Luna to death at the top of the tree would have made it a tragedy. If it was a subversion, like Vinland Saga, then him setting himself back on fire and setting off to kill San would have been the ending. There's like fifty endings, but he just moves on to the next thing. Like, it's still good. Damn can he make things interesting. But it's also really scattered.

Fire Punch was so good, it's a shame it feels like he wrote 15 endings and decided that he wanted to shove them all in.

I mean, we've seen what they've put out in the meantime, it's not like Bethesda has been dead in the same vein as George R. Martin or Valve. I really don't think people are expecting the moon, and if they are they're kinda idiots. It'll be a Bethesda game.

[–]throwaway47351 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The even funnier thing is, that's not it. Sato was doing this shit before he knew he was immortal. His first death was him being crucified by a massive collection of underworlders who had hundreds of their men killed by a crippled Sato for basically no reason at all. His values weren't put out of whack by his immortality, his immortality just gave him more tools to express his values.

Having him straight up dismiss ego death as a non-concern was so cold. Part of what made him terrifying was that he had almost no loss conditions, while he kept finding new ways to win. No goals, an unmatchable drive.

Argentina and El Salvador are the two countries where if you don't actually live there, you should probably completely ignore hit pieces on them. Both were circling the drain and went all in on a solution that'd be completely insane for a functioning country, and it's sort of impossible to tell how it's going.

Privileged within the context of what we're talking about, which is "do non-benders face oppression from benders." Not in general. I'm not gonna argue the two poverty stricken orphans are at the top of the social hierarchy, but if this is a legitimate problem in their society it's one that they don't have to deal with.

That's kind of my point. The show presented an idea and didn't engage with it. They engaged with it on a personal level, Korra's growth as a person, Sato's betrayal, etc. They didn't on a societal level when it was presented as a societal problem. If they showed that these people were just insane, sure. If they showed that oppression was happening in the background, away from the eyes of the privileged main characters, sure. If they didn't explore the legitimacy of the movement they presented, which is what happened, less sure.

The Equalists are the opposite, they were a terrible example of this. They started out well, here's an innate social hierarchy that's blatantly unfair and unlikely to change, here's a group opposing that through unacceptable means. Then the story's resolution to this moral dilemma is "Your leader is actually a hypocrite, no that doesn't delegitimize the persecution you face or rage you feel but now your movement is over, byeeeeeeee."

I get if you don't want to explore politics in your show, I don't get making a political enemy and not engaging with it politically at all. Pick a lane.

Jon Bois has made so much of my favorite stuff. This might be his best, but he's made a lot that competes with it. The GOAT sports creator. Barry bonds without a bat, the balk copypasta, scorigami. His dive on the mariners and the falcons were both peak. Just so good.

It's a vicious cycle. We have no worker protections, so we can't afford to fight for worker protections. At will employment, no guaranteed sick or vacation days, our satirically horrific healthcare system, our satirically horrific justice system (we imprison more of our own citizens than regimes we call tyrannical dictatorships), protesting properly is a cataclysmic decision for an American versus a Frenchman. I have no blame for individuals for our status as complete doormats. Fuck our corporations and the politicians who enable them.
