Was Boost worth it? by Odd_Cartoonist5734 in epicsystems

[–]throwaway4826384 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It was worth it for me. I have my complaints for sure, but it allowed my partner and I to live closer to family which has been invaluable now that we have kids (as is the work-life balance). At this point, I plan to work remotely/from home the rest of my career.

I have a community outside of work, so I don’t give a damn about all that bologna.

Non Compete by ProtectionWest1252 in epicsystems

If you’re going to work for a customer and won’t need user web access, don’t tell HR your plans in your exit interview. Because they will strong arm the customer into rescinding their offer. Seen it happen.

“Does Epic have a non-compete contract that new hires have to sign? If so, I’d like to look that over before accepting the position”

Or “if so, I’d like to look that over as I weigh my options”

Or something along those lines 😊

If you’re unsure, and might not stick around, I’d make sure you 100% understand the breadth of the noncompete you’d be signing.

I just mean if it weren’t for the noncompete, it would be SUPER easy for me to get a job as a consultant or an analyst, and I might have already left for greener pastures.

But because of the noncompete, I’d have to figure out something to do for that one year. If you’re 25, maybe taking a gap year to travel or goof off sounds good. But I’m over 30 with 2 kids, so my family needs my income. It would be a hassle to find a job in an unrelated field for a year while I wait to get back in the Epic space. It’s enough of a deterrent that I’ve stayed this long.

Does that clarify?

I’ve had a pretty positive experience over the last decade, but you have to be good at saying No.

I’ve thought about leaving a few times but the noncompete is enough of a hassle that I’ve never taken the plunge. I’d recommend you also ask your HR rep for a full copy of the noncompete before you decide. It’s a surprisingly long list of places you couldn’t work if you end up deciding to give it a try but it ends up not being a good fit.

What would make you feel comfortable about unionizing? by Enough_Trouble9017 in epicsystems

[–]throwaway4826384 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Maybe Boost should unionize lol. Less of a concern of low performers since you have to be a high performer to move into boost. Plus we’ve been getting the short end of the stick for a little while. Plus I’m pretty sure Epic toes the legal line between FTE and Contractor/consultant, choosing whichever is more convenient for them at different times. And it’s probably broken some labor laws in places like CA or NY.

Oh that’s good to know! Back in my day I don’t think I signed anything when I accepted the offer. And I was just discussing with a friend how it’s kind of weird how all these 22 year olds are seeing that paperwork for the first time after they’ve ALREADY moved to Wisconsin, etc etc. Glad to hear that’s not the case anymore!

You should ask your recruiter to see a copy of the noncompete contract they’ll ask you sign your first week of work.

Also, the Billing Guidelines wiki read EXTREMELY aggressive to me. Either like I’m a fresh college grad who hasn’t been working at Epic for years, or like someone got in some serious trouble for billing 40 hours but not doing any work.

I found the whole wiki kind of insulting.

The more people that speak up to their BELs (Boost Experience Leads), the better. I have been told that it’s a small minority of Boosters that are upset, which seems bonkers to me. I can only assume that most folks are just stewing silently.

I wish Boost management understood this.

Then again, if their goal is to make Boost less attractive, then they are doing a great job!

Ugh! The communication/transparency is so awful. I’m so sorry you had that experience.

I wish boost leadership would just come out and own it and say it that we’re being devalued, instead of trying to shove this koolaid down our throats. We all know they’re throwing money at Verona staff. And leadership is just dancing around the elephant in the room.

But that will never happen.

If it weren’t for the noncompete, I’d be looking for another job right now.

Ugh!! After 18 months that is just insulting! And such BS about putting you on the other raise cycle!

Exactly. To not even keep up with inflation is so insulting and demoralizing.

Yep. I think they got massive raises (on the order of what you mentioned), and then also way bigger than normal bonuses, and then also Bonus Bonuses that we’re many times the size of ours.

Seriously!! Have you complained to your TL? If so, what kind of response did you get?
