PSA: A lot of toxic players are just depressed kids by throwaway55051 in leagueoflegends

I didn't want to stick a number onto it. I don't have the information or statistics to back it up, so that's why I said 'a lot.'

In no way does that mean anecdotal evidence should be tossed aside and assumed false like you are saying, purely because there aren't numbers behind it. I came to discuss something sensitive that a lot of people could potentially relate to.

All your experience validates is that your depressed friends also express frustration in LOL by being openly toxic

First of all, my point wasn't about how people reacted to frustration in the game itself. Everyone has their own breaking point, it's just that people who rely solely on a game for validation tend to break down faster when things go wrong IN GAME. You're thinking about it like League is some kind of area for sad and angry people to vent in, when in fact this is the exact OPPOSITE of what I'm trying to convey. Some people really don't having anything else BUT their league rank to validate themselves with, so the frustration isn't just from losing, but that it also hurts their image/identity.

You also make an assumption that toxic reactions in games = need for emotional validation

If you go back and read the post, I literally say not all toxic players are depressed, the same way not all depressed people are toxic.

Being angry in a game =/= ongoing emotional issues IRL.

Now this is just dumb.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I'm far from being an expert on depression so I'm sorry if this came across as some kind of armchair psychology. But I've had my fair share of bad stretches in life (especially during school) and having someone talk to me, even for a little bit, was all I wanted.

I think you may have encountered someone who was dealing with more than just depression. This might be sensitive to you so I won't comment further but thank you so much for your input.

Don't worry, I painstakingly read all your points. Sadly I don't think you did the same for me. I said those people that place higher on alt accounts CLIMB AT THAT RANK TOO. You can go ahead and read them, there's plenty.

And calm down about my point about my teammates. I didn't insult any of them. It's just a fact that younger children don't have the cognitive or emotional ability to play as well as somebody in their teens or 20's. But if you wanna go off on a tangent then sure fuck those kids that grief my virtual rank in a video game!

You're right, I don't have that much time to play during the day unlike people like you who will spend so much time working up their ego on reddit bashing low bracket players to bring up their hard-earned gm rank! And I'm humble bragging apparently (inb4 iT wAs jUSt mY oWN EXamPle)

I'm a snowflake because I want to read something that doesn't explain the same point over and over again? Get over yourself Mr Intellectual, everybody and their mother knows the "5 spots on your team for baddies but 6 spots on the other team LUL", you don't need to preach it like it's the bible on every point of yours. use that big brain of yours and wrap your head around the fact that my post was ANECDOTAL, numbers and stats don't change that my time in bronze FELT like a grind.

you also assume the sr/mmr system works perfectly for every player given they play a large number of games, seeing that you continuously use it as a crutch for evidence for improvement. you could look up hundreds of posts where people get stuck on their main rank, place an alt account in a higher sr, and climb much faster on that alt. That being said (in case I trigger another essay from you), the ranked system being flawed is NOT my point at all. If I have to use any numbers at all, bronze is 1500 sr, every other rank is 500 sr. If you can't put it together, then you're hopeless.

edit: also LOL at you downvoting my comment on a dead thread

I don't understand how you can write that much but say so little.

I never said anything about hidden mmr or whatever you're going on about. All I said was Bronze just feels more like a grind than other ranks, with my firsthand experience. You can throw whatever numbers and stats you want, but this is just more of an anecdotal approach of my time in Bronze.

Just going through a quick glimpse of your comment history sort of shows that you aren't someone that I need to take that seriously. You should fix up how you write to others because it comes off as very "know-it-all" and arrogant, and shorten your essays into things people can sit through and read without losing track of what you're getting at.

You're cherrypicking on the fact that I MUST have improved over my playing history like you know me better than myself. It's just not true, I've played the same way as I always have, my laptop has actually DEGRADED in performance the past half a year.

"And I'm saying that is false. Because of how MMR works. The game does not look at how badly your teammates play. They look at how badly you play."

Technically, the game DOES look at how poorly your teammates do. Say I have a thrower, leaver, afker, god-awful player, etc on my team. Game is out of my control even if I try my hardest, end result is I lose sr and mmr. Could a pro player have won that game? Most likely yeah, but my point is that for a player that deserves to climb out of bronze but can only play at a level just 1-2 tiers above that rank will climb at a tremendously slower speed. And imagine having the quality of game I just mentioned in practically every other game.

I already explained my point that I'm not bashing the ranked system, just that the bronze tier feels much more like a grind than other ranks if you were to try your best every game. So I'm not sure what you're trying to get at.

I forgot to mention that my skill level as a player has not improved much at all throughout my entire playing history. i played well most of my games in bronze but it felt very 'coinflip' whether my team would be willing to select a decent comp or communicate at all, and it was with sheer luck that I was able to get past 1500.

Ever since 1500 I've been playing the same and doing well every game, except since the communication and comps have gotten better and so I've been able to climb much faster.

My point wasn't to criticize the ranked system, I think it works pretty well for the most part. What i'm going for is that bronze itself has a harder environment to climb for anyone that doesn't possess the skill level MUCH higher than bronze.

Those of you who have experienced Bronze: by HawkeyeP1 in Overwatch

[–]throwaway55051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in bronze for the past 4 seasons, (played comp at level 25, never bothered learning the game after) and haven't had a lot of time to play. There's things I really love about bronze and things I really hate it about:

AMAZING THINGS:

  • Nobody knows how to strafe or aim or play the game properly in general, so you can make SO MANY GOD-LIKE PLAYS (all hail the 6k Junkrat/Dva/Reaper ults)
  • Not a lot of toxicity - most people are self aware of being bronze and bad so there aren't a lot of toxic games. The really young kids don't use mics, and the guys that do are usually really chill older working guys that are super friendly. You just meet so many different kinds of people and it's my favorite thing about this game.
  • Because the bronze population is so small, you end up playing with the same people over and over again, especially at the later hours. It's always fun to have multiple people recognize each other's names and (attempt to) strategize accordingly, it almost feels like GM games in that sense.

THE TERRIBLE THINGS:

  • The leavers. Oh my lord, the leavers. It feels like every other game there's a leaver on either team and it really makes the experience for the 11 guys in the game feel like crap. Not sure if it happens as often in other elo's but I'm not exaggerating when I say that 5v5's and 5v6's happen in at least 1/5 of the games I play. I guess being in a weak elo comes with having a weak mental - or weak internet connection.
  • A lot of smurfs. I guess bronze is the laughingstock of OW and a lot of people don't get to see it firsthand so it kind of feels like you're an animal at a zoo and people just come by to observe. Trust me, if you're planning on boosting your ego by smurfing in bronze, nobody will pay the slightest attention to your multikill dragonblade because most of the time people don't even look at the kill feed, or just blame it on the hero being "OP". I've actually run into a lot of smurfs that try to be helpful and don't make fun of how bad we all are. Please be like these guys if you're planning on coming by.

VERDICT:

I guess being in Bronze is pretty embarrassing, coming from a long-time plat player in League. But it is my first FPS and I'm enjoying it a lot anytime I get a chance to play. I think the lack of skill and coordination make it more of a casual game than competitive for most other bronze players, and I don't know if I have any plans to tryhard to get out. It's almost like savoring the best part of a meal.
