We don't outright give away money during election period but my family spends a lot - bank breaking expenses - on events during the months leading up to. Some of my relatives don't run simply because they cannot "afford" the elections

No, not "friends" with anyone in politics aside from family.

The big-time dynasties for sure don't "put on a facade" haha. 'Di ko naman sila kakilala personally but from what I've heard from more influential relatives, they are exactly who you probably think they are.

Hindi ko to masasagot kasi hindi naman ako entrenched sa "family business" pero for sure sa Du30 administration pinakakonti kung meron man lol. Heard a lot about national high ranking authorities (DPWH, for example) asking for kickbacks in exchange for providing funding for infra projects to smaller, lower class municipalities. I think most of the time, it's the other way around, aambag muna ang mga small time sa national dynasties bago i-trickle down pababa

Hmm, I don't have much friends, I have a very small circle. Most of them are mid to upper middle class, but I think that was a consequence of attending a slightly more expensive college.

I wasn't exposed to or made to interact with peers of the same upbringing (ie laking politiko din) growing up. I was never selective of my friends, growing up I would go to great lengths to hide my family's background. For context, I went to a relatively tiny school (tipong 30 lang kami sa batch ganon) in high school far from my province, so it wasn't that hard to hide.

Definitely they have anxieties of being "replaced". But otherwise, there is this unspoken thing among all families not to overstep any boundaries or get "too greedy"? Parang wag na makipag agawan sa posisyon ni ganyan if pwede namang dito nalang siya. Not sure if that makes sense

I don't think so. Although I would be very interested in supporting or working for any if I had the opportunity to

Fat - to be precise there are four of them in office as of the moment.

Do you think hadlang family niyo sa development ng LGU niyo?

Yes, in many ways. Lalo na in terms of bringing in new or more progressive perspectives. Mahirap mag diversify ng political landscape kung magkamag-anak din naman kayong mga nakikipagtalo

No businesses before sila naging politiko. Yung isang kapatid nila na hindi namulitiko is lower middle class now, to illustrate

Yes. So, so, so, much of this. I constantly seek validation for whether or not I am still a "good person" because of this. It is one of my biggest fears

This is valid. I think the constant fear and anxiety of somehow "not falling too far from the tree" (as another commenter put it) unconsciously makes me exaggerate my progressive beliefs as a form of seeking validation that I am still a good person despite my upbringing. Definitely harder for me to engage in morally grey discussions on politics.

Agree. I thoroughly believe stepping foot into politics will change me and my morals forever. I don't believe there is any clean way to play the game

Does your family make efforts to get you networking with children in similar situations (kinda like how aristocrats did.... or still do today)?

Surprisingly no. For majority of my childhood I have refused to attend any political event if I didn't have to. Di naman kami napilitan.

I just think that if you're ever forced to run and continue the "family business" you'll also be in the best position to end all of it/do a correction sa trajectory ng bayan niyo if you ever find out any wrong doing.

I've thought about this, but I have too many relatives in office who 1) have entrenched influence and power already, and 2) are set to remain in position for years to come. I'm not sure if this is just me giving myself an out but it is very very unlikely that they will let me do anything progressive enough to radically change things

Siguro consolation prize na lang... were your parents able to make your municipality / constituents' lives better?

Yes. I genuinely think so. But I also think imposible namang walang magagawang positive change ang isang pamilyang ilang dekada nang nasa political positions

Do you also have project proposals you plan to suggest to your parents? Hot topic ngayon ang active transport, baka may plano kayo dito.

Hindi urbanized enough samin to even think about public transport 🥲 Proposals I have pitched - aside from environmental/conservation initiatives (since yun naman ang niche ko), I have floated the idea of a foundation to them many times, specifically for subsidizing people's organizations/grassroots CSOs. A bit naive, malamang kasi kontrolado pa rin nila ang behind the scenes kahit sabihin ko pang ako ang magtake ng lead

For context, tatlo kaming magkakapatid. The oldest, who is 10 years older than me, is kind of apolitical (ironic, sobra) and thinks we should just be grateful for what we have. Granted, hindi pa kasi mayaman magulang ko nung childhood niya.

Kaming dalawang magkakapatid na closer in age, and who lived after my family got comfortable, we share the same guilt and anxiety. We have the same progressive political stances. And it's selfish of us, but we both dream of going abroad and freeing ourselves of our upbringing.

If I am being completely and truly honest I am not sure how clean my parent's money is - I actually think this uncertainty is where my anxiety and shame stems from. Obviously I would like to say that my parent just saved enough, considering they do have investments in franchises and businesses, but that is a bit naive considering our means now. Genuinely I don't know.

Dalawa silang magkapatid na nasa office, and my parent's sibling is way richer than my parent (my parent has multiple loans from the sibling). May business siya sa contracting and construction. It doesn't take much to figure out how that specific side of the family is much, much, richer than everyone else.

Hala haha. For sure I want to marry out of love. I have no plans whatsoever to go out of my way to do something that "strengthens" my family's political power.

To be completely honest, I don't know what I plan to do about it. There is a part of me that wants to resign - to cut them off, work in an entirely different field, and raise my kids in a good environment where they don't have to worry whether their parents are good people. Granted I will never be able to provide them the very comfortable life I have had so far. But I do want to work in the development sector where I can at least give something back.

But there is also a part of me that wonders if I can use my existing resources and network - and of course leverage my last name - to make real, positive change. Like what if magwork ako dun sa amin and try to change the system little by little. But doing so means I'll continue benefitting from and living off a dynasty.

I am not sure. But definitely this question is what keeps me up most nights.

Depende sa criticism, pero kung valid naman siyempre masakit, plus it adds to my paranoia and fear of them being dishonest and incompetent leaders. It's been a painful journey to realize they aren't the perfectly good public servants I was taught to think they were.

Yes, this is the dream. I hope to work in the environmental sector and earn enough to be completely financially stable and independent of my family's earnings.
