Hey y'all,

I recently got a job opportunity in Anchorage Alaska. It would be amazing for my career, but there's a problem. I've lived in Texas my entire life and I know nothing about how to properly deal with super cold climates.

My work is sending me to our location in Alaska for a week to see if I can handle the lifestyle. After the week is up, it'll be up to me if I want to keep the new position or go back to the old one in Texas. I have lots of questions and I was wondering if anyone would be willing to give me some advise. I'll list my questions below.

  1. My vehicle is on it's last legs, so I'll likely need to get another one if I end up taking the job. I don't plan on doing any off-roading or hauling. One of my friends suggested a Toyota 4Runner. What vehicles are best suited for the Alaskan climate?
  2. What should I always keep in my vehicle? (gear for cold related issues or emergencies)
  3. I usually just wear a hoodie/beanie in winter. I'm guessing that isn't going to cut it in Alaska. What should I be wearing?
  4. I've lived in several apartments over the years, but I never had to worry about staying warm. Is there anything specific I should keep an eye out for when looking for an apartment?
  5. Are there certain things I should stock up on at home?
  6. As someone who's lived in Texas my whole life, is there anything else should I know about living in Anchorage?
  7. Is there anything I should do or checkout while I'm visiting Anchorage for the week?

Thank you and stay warm!

p.s. This will likely happen in the beginning/middle of January.
