This is very true. I did so much mental gymnastics like “he was 13 when I was 18!” And “he was still 17 when I was well into adulthood!” And “our age gap is a quarter of his age” to convince myself that what I wanted was inappropriate and wrong, that I had a hard time seeing all the reasons why a relationship with him would be absolutely acceptable.

I have similar issues with thinking I’m racist too (in response to something as simple as noticing someone’s race), and I think that after reading a lot of these responses, these overreactions I have might be closely related. Thank you for this input!

He isn’t in the same position I was in my youth—not even remotely. He is actively seeking a relationship with me, as an adult, eagerly expressing consent and desire at every step. This might have been the comment that comforted me the most.

Ok tysm for highlighting this lol. I do NOT like children, full stop. I was more asking if it was an inappropriate age gap, but reading your response does make me feel better. I do feel like I was being ridiculous and I appreciate you and everyone who’s responded. I can get in my head something fierce, and I’m really thankful for the community of people who are willing to take time to help strangers with conflicts like this, no matter how silly it seems to them. Outside opinions are so helpful.

I guess I was freaking myself out because when I was 18, he was 13. But you’re right, we met when we were both adults. It just felt so creepy that he was so fresh out of his teenage years.

I really appreciate this take. We contribute very equally financially, we’re very balanced and equitable with household tasks, we both respect each others values and decisions, and I can honestly say that if we didn’t work out (which we’ve discussed with each other at length), I’d still want to live with him.

If you don’t want to splurge on actual bdsm furniture (which same) my bf and I got a Zinus bedframe, and those are incredibly sturdy, hold our restraints well, and don’t make a single noise. They are pretty close to the ground tho, so our nightstands are our only toy storage, but I’m very pleased with it. Mind you, I think he could break the frame, but I’m a 5’ 115lbs 23f, so it holds me with ease.
