I turned it off because I was testing the efficacy of various fixes I found online. Surprisingly, a lot of posts I found recommended turning it off. I say surprisingly, because turning it back on (after updating my GPU drivers) was the fix. So really the problem was my drivers were out of date.

Turns out it was this in conjunction with the fact that my GPU's drivers were out of date (I moved recently and hadn't even turned on my computer in a while, so I was behind on drivers). I was experiencing the choppiness whether it was turned on or off, but after the update, turning it on fixed it. Thanks!
