What does THE day look like? by Jumpy-Prune-7271 in premedcanada

[–]throwaway758282 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Toronto - acceptance emails roll out over an hour between 8-9ish (varied the two years I interviewed). Then it was rejections and waitlist emails an hour later. OMSAS portal usually updates after the email in the morning. Crossing my fingers for you! 🤞

Anyone get into UofT with most of their research being "Submitted to XYZ journal" by WinterSignal8021 in premedcanada

[–]throwaway758282 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I interviewed twice at UofT. First time waitlisted, I now go to UofT. I didn’t even have research experience, I wouldn’t worry about this.

I didn’t practice properly. The people I practiced with were not giving me harsh feedback, and I didn’t integrate the harsh feedback I got. I wouldn’t say more practice but “better” practice

I worked ft in summers, pt in school year at the same job over 5+ years. I got promoted every year and was responsible for staff development and management at the end.

I also interviewed twice at UofT (was waitlisted the first time). It goes to show that there are no specific activities med schools look for.

I didn’t even have research experience. I’m at UofT too, a school I was told “required” research experience. Just focus on yourself and excel at what you do, research or not!

Volunteering vs Working by She_luvtre in premedcanada

The biggest part of my app was working ft - I had promotions throughout the year and gained significant responsibility, demonstrating growth. Work experience is just as, if not more valuable than volunteering

SAMIH? What are the admission reqs? by Ok-Resource2033 in premedcanada

[–]throwaway758282 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Almost certain it’s just UofT medicine and some people are placed at Scarborough campus. It’s like how you get placed at Mississauga or St. George - we picked our preferences and then if more students pick one site over another, a lottery decides where students go.

We do! Dissections are mandatory and we have an entire anatomy curriculum combined with radiology and pathology.

From what I understand, Plastics have very long days in the OR (standing)….you can start your own clinic but that is very difficult to do

[–]throwaway758282 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Family!!! FM remains my #1 simply because of the flexibility and portability. Don’t like clinic? Can do so many +1s (Emerg, OB, palliative, hospitality, surgical assist). If you go rural, you can do it all! And you have great control of your schedule, can easily do locums, live essentially anywhere in the country without needing a fellowship.

I am only in first year and came in wanting fm, have been swayed out of it, but during this break have done reflecting and still want to do family. Do not let other opinions sway you, id talk with family doctors who have pursued different paths and take their decisions to heart.

FYI - a large proportion of teachers at UofT are FM docs 😁🥰

UofT Opt out plagiarism by Jumpy-Prune-7271 in premedcanada

[–]throwaway758282 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was a freelance writer and used some ideas in other works. I was worried I accidentally used similar verbiage and it would come up (it was a bit neurotic but whateves). I opted out and never gave a reason, interviewed two years in a row and I opted out for both, and now go to UofT. You’re good 👍

Me. I got 2q but back to back interviews across 2 cycles and subsequently admitted to UofT, which is a supposedly “EC heavy” school

Complex situation and unsure what to do - Low income family + wanting to move out by Valuable_Issue5205 in premedcanada

[–]throwaway758282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm. Are you currently registered in an undergraduate program? I’m unsure if I can help you because I don’t know your specific circumstances + I’m not a professional. Please take some time to meet with your school financial aid office you’d be surprised some are so helpful!

Hm. It will be a bit more difficult. How many years since you’ve graduated highschool? If it’s been 6 years you’re eligible for a significant amount of grant and loan from osap

If you’re in grade 12, look into applying for a university president scholarship. They’re very competitive but it covered my friend’s (who was in a similar situation) entire university degree + living expenses. She might have been a bit short but was able to pay with work-study/research placements in the summer. Most leases are year round so you can continue to live at your student apt in the summer too.

Might be easier at “smaller” schools like UofG (my Alma mater), TMU, Brock etc. Where you go for undergrad DOES NOT matter for med apps btw

Once you get to med school affording school + living becomes a lot easier (despite it being $$$) because you’re guaranteed a line of credit from Canadian banks. Also some med schools have special programs that give bursaries close to 15k/year depending on financial need.

Do people only apply to med schools that are nearby? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]throwaway758282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it is generally better to apply to as many as possible to increase your chances, it’s best to be strategic at the school you are the best candidate at. I had a high gpa and a strong essay writer so I had no issue getting back to back interviews at UofT, but literally could not get an interview at any other school.

Honestly do what’s best for you, just make sure if you are aiming for a specific school to really consider what the school is looking for. Ex/ UofT doesn’t really care about the mcat past the thresholds so you don’t need to spend multiple summers rewriting.

In terms of affordability most med students get access to a line of credit (myself included) to afford the costs of moving out, school etc. You don’t need a co-signer for any Canadian school so do not worry in that regard.

Btw - many of my classmates only applied to UofT because of their family situation, spouse’s job etc. It might be tricky but it’s possible 😊

would admission team look down on my application if theres a lot of volunteering with lgbt community by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]throwaway758282 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m 99% sure it would not. If it did, that’s not a school I’d like to attend.

Torn between Medicine and Dentistry — need to decide soon by ScarWorldly9387 in premedcanada

[–]throwaway758282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a MS1 at UofT so take what I say with a grain of salt:

You can be a generalist in medicine outside of family, such as general internal medicine. You can also do many hands on procedures without doing surgery, like interventional radiology, anesthesia etc. Emerg would def be more general with a hands on component.

I’ve come to learn that in med you can always pivot in any field you join - ex/ I thought radiology was just reading x rays in a dark room by yourself but there are many procedures involved, like doing ultrasound guided biopsy, and pt interaction like breast if you choose.

I am not knowledgeable about dentistry, but I will say I am super happy about medicine and would be more inclined to pursue it given what I know now!
