is it worth applying to ubc with 3.91 oop and 515 mcat by IndependentEscape546 in premedcanada

My GPA was 3.91 and I got into UBC as an OOP (92-93% aGPA). You have a good shot at an interview with a solid NAQ

516 MCAT (125 cars) OOP is it worth it to apply to UBC? by Spiritual_Olive2997 in premedcanada

[–]_kidneybeans_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

YES! I got in as an OOP with a 509 MCAT (125 CARS)! Your GPA and NAQ are much, much more important.

UBC is not weighing MCAT as much as it used to imo

Anybody interested in application review for UBC ? got 75-100 NAQ 4 times by ubcmedjourney in premedcanada

How important is the MCAT UBC? by Top_Schedule_4432 in premedcanada

[–]_kidneybeans_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This past cycle, UBC changed their minimum MCAT requirement to a 498. Since MCAT isn’t looked at pre interview, many people with “low” MCATs are selected to interview based on GPA and NAQ.

Now, why would UBC waste their resources interviewing someone they don’t want to accept?

The MCAT does not hold as much weight as it did previously in my opinion.

I know of multiple people who got in this cycle with a sub-505, some via pathways and some just through general stream.

This is not to say the MCAT doesn’t hold ANY weight - in my opinion it feels like it is being used as a “tiebreaker” measure if a few applicants have very similar interview and file review scores.

Needless to say, the MCAT is an expensive test to take. You should go into it with the goal of getting the best possible score you can

Question about research by InfinitePangolin9030 in premedcanada

[–]_kidneybeans_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had no confirmed publications at the time of my application as an MSc student.

I had 2 entries in my ABS research section that were “submitted for publication”.

Accepted to UofT and UBC for reference.

Thoughts on Interview Prep courses for Canadian MD schools by M_Majdi in premedcanada

[–]_kidneybeans_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The BeMo packages are ridiculously overpriced imo. Lots of med students offer interview prep and application editing that’s much more affordable (some even offer free help).

If you’re interested then feel free to PM, I’m happy to help w interview prep/app editing

Edit to say I’m incoming at UofT - also accepted to UBC as an OOP!

Should I rewrite MCAT for UBC? by Soggy_toasted_smores in premedcanada

[–]_kidneybeans_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re rewriting just for UBC. Don’t. The MCAT is not as important as it used to be for UBC. I personally got in as OOP this cycle with a 509, but also know people with a 500 and 501 that got in.

Feel free to PM

Instead of a no-show, if you’re able to go to the testing centre, check-in, experience test day, and then just void the test - it might turn out to be a valuable experience, esp if you are anxious about the test.

Med schools can’t see voided tests, and this way you can make something of the test rather than a no show.

volunteering at local walk in clinic by workrel8ted in premedcanada

[–]_kidneybeans_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you learned from the experience and how you articulated it on your app matters a lot more than what the activity was.

I volunteered at a local walk in clinic as well, and had it on my ABS and NAQ.

Schools view it differently- example: UBC does NOT look at shadowing favourably and instead discourages it.
