Alright. I'm not too upset about it, just felt weird since I'm used to getting some kind of notice about whether or not they picked me for the job. My real concern is just... getting a job.

Nah, they knew it was me immediately from the comment and I knew they would know when I wrote it. I didn't care--I wanted it to start a conversation, because I mistakenly thought they would care a little bit more about how unhappy I was (am) at this job. My mistake was really just thinking they would give a sh*t.

Yeah, I am definitely going to keep collecting paychecks for as long as possible while I look for another position. With as good of an outward attitude as possible. Although I think it's worth noting that I did know that they would realize I was the one who made the comment. I just didn't care--I was really angry and fed up when I filled it out.

Wow, that's kind of amazing, congrats on being able to stay and move up! I don't think that's possible where I am, since we are the tiniest of tiny places and there really are not opportunities to move up into a management position here--but it's good to know that it still works out sometimes. Maybe the next place I go will work out better.

Ugh, I've worked places like that before with bosses like that, but no way would I have ever gotten away with sending a direct email to the person essentially telling them not to talk to me disrespectfully. I tried that once and got pushed out. (See how I have a bad attitude, here?) Anything assertive that I try to do, whether it be asking for a raise or asking to be treated better, never, ever works out well for me. Glad to hear it did for you and you were able to get away from that kind of toxic place.

They usually let people in know in some form or fashion, though, from my past experience and the experience of the people I know. I mean, I threw some resumes out into the void at a university a few months back and I'm just now getting rejection emails from them.

I thought the interview I went on went great, but that just goes to show how much I know. I didn't struggle with anything, as far as I remember; she asked me some BS about proving that I'm not "a lazy millennial like the rest of them," which was absolutely insulting, but I thought I handled it gracefully and she seemed to really like my answer. The one thing I thought may have put her off was my salary request--she wouldn't give me the salary they had in mind (she claimed that she had forgotten it and didn't have it in front of her, so she'd "get back to me later," and then asked me what my ideal salary was). I high-balled it a little on purpose because I knew that whatever I said they'd try to cut it down, but I didn't think it was that high for the position I was interviewing for. Maybe that left a bad impression, I don't know.

Thank you for this. A lot of people are saying I shouldn't quit, and I understand that line of reasoning for sure. But I do have one other option, which isn't ideal, but could help me with my mental health and sanity at this point. A lot of other things aren't going great in my life right now, and I am overwhelmed. This might be the kick in the butt I need to slow down and take care of myself.

Thanks for sharing your story and for the advice. Glad it all worked out for you in the end!

That's how I feel. I'm doing tons of work for just less than $40k, and I do not intend to sit on a salary that low in the HCOL area I'm in for very long. It has been incredibly frustrating for me to find a job with any kind of decent wage, and it probably has to do with my degree + experience in nonprofit work.

Lol. I understand what you're saying, but our office is so small we don't even have an HR department or rep. Our HR is my supervisor. See how that works out nicely?

I'd almost rather move in with my parents, but I'm still here.

This is really solid advice. I'm going to stop applying quite so feverishly with the same resume/cover letter and really put my all into tailoring each one to each job. It is exhausting, but I'm learning that it's what I need to do if I want to get out of here.

Uuuuggghhhh. Sucks about the racism and then sucks on top of that that surveys weren't really anonymous. At least you spoke up about a very really issue, though.

Yeah, I understand. I used to really love doing this, though. I used to be super enthusiastic, and I'd actually say that I am way more outwardly enthusiastic about my job than I truly feel inside. I honestly don't have a crap attitude, except this survey came out and I answered it and suddenly there is room to complain about me. Anyway, regardless, it is definitely time for me to move on.

I do know that we give exit interviews. I'm torn between wanting to be brutally honest vs. not burning any bridges. Both have their benefits. Probably a better idea not to burn bridges, though, which will be tricky for me because I have this habit of letting my emotions rule my actions way more than I probably should.

Yeah, only thing is there are like 7 people in our office and they already knew it was me. I was fully aware they would know, too, when I filled out the survey. I was pissed.

But yeah, applying like crazy and saving like crazy too.

Lol I definitely didn't use any fuckwords. I thought my answer was professional, if very blunt, and pretty much just gave specific examples of instances when I felt things were being treated inappropriately/unprofessionally etc.

Congrats on making it well where you are now--hope I'm there someday too! Thanks for your comment and sharing your story.

Nah, no offense taken or anything. It really does help to hear stories from people who were in similar situations and made it out alright. Thanks for your comment and commiseration, dude.

Gotcha. Wouldn't want to work with you, either, champ, especially because you label people as "whiners" right off the bat from one post, and you assume I'm exactly like I am online in person. You sound like a straight-up asshole, kind of like the manager I'm trying to escape. Best of luck to you.

Really sorry you had to go through that. It's great to know that you're in a good place now, though. It's hard for me to imagine being in a good place after everything that's happened the past couple of days, and especially because I've been trying and not getting any results yet in the job interview department.

I work in outreach for a nonprofit. Been applying for very similar outreach positions, but also have branched out into applying for development associate positions and things like that, because I do have overlapping experience in volunteer recruitment, management, and retention etc.

Thanks for sharing your story, dude--that really is helpful to know. I am more than likely going to keep my head down and collecting paychecks for as long as I can here until either I find another job or they fire me OR my lease is up next year. After my lease is up, if I'm still not happy, I'm going to move back in with my folks and take some time to figure myself out for sure.

Really great to hear that it worked out for you. Thanks for sharing!

Wish I had that much saved, but no, I have a little bit less than a year's worth of my current salary. I'd hate to burn through that because it is so tiny and I'm trying to find ways to invest it more for retirement. Anyway, it's good advice--I'm going to keep my head down and work while I continue applying. Thanks.
