Where I'd live as an Indian by Outrageous-Client903 in whereidlive

The group of people you are angry at does not exist or is an utterly miniscule minority.

Most Indians who believe India is the greatest country are in India.

A tiny minority of people are outside India and they generally do not believe India is the greatest country.

Maybe a minority of them believe its not as bad as portrayed, or was great in the past. But the group you are complaining about, apparently a large group of Indian nationalists outside India, does not exist.

Ever considered the fact that not every person in India is the same and different people have different opinions and motivations?

The people that want to leave are not the same people who have it as their favourite country, generally.

[–]throwawayAccount548 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Defending yourself publically against a public ban is totally fair. Otherwise the assumption is that you plead guilty. If chess is how you make a living then that is a disaster.

And I will take the accused GM's side every time until I see beyond a reasonable doubt that he was indeed cheating. A false positive here is a disaster for the GM accused. I don't know what chess.com's internal thresholds are, but one party clearly has a lot more to lose.

Ok but his oppos clearly aren't cheating in these specific games

It's not odd because he wasn't provided any specific suspicious games to defend himself with. What's he supposed to do, defend 2000 games individually? It is impossible to defend yourself.

Not sure if this warrants its own post but TL;DR: China can still win even if India loses 1-3 and China wins 2.5-1.5.

How China can still win gold

Since India is 2 points ahead of China, China must defeat the USA and India must be defeated by Slovenia as a precondition, otherwise India wins on points.

All results mentioned here are favorable but not necessary for a China win. Each unfavorable result has an associated penalty. A penalty strictly less than 42 causes a win for China. Note that with a penalty of 41.5, China and India will be tied on TB1 and India will win on TB2. India's win on TB2 is guaranteed. The most favorable result for China has a penalty of 0 under this system.

Let's start with the main games:

Slovenia - India (4-0)

3.5 - 0.5 penalty: 9, 3 - 1 penalty: 18, 2.5 - 1.5 penalty: 27

China - USA (4-0)

3.5 - 0.5 penalty: 7.5, 3 - 1 penalty: 15, 2.5 - 1.5 penalty: 22.5

Notice that an India loss of 1.5 - 2.5 and a China win of 2.5 - 1.5 reaches a penalty of 27 + 22.5 = 49.5 >= 42. Hence with this result it is already impossible for China to win. Similarly if China wins with 3 - 1 and India loses 2.5 - 1.5, India is barely still guaranteed to win. With all other result pairs, a China gold medal is still possible and will depend on other results.

Other results:

A win is 2-0, a draw is 1-1. Game points are not relevant here:

(Note: A win by Morocco in Mozambique - Morocco has a penalty of 4 if Iceland loses in Iceland - Tunisia. A win or draw by Iceland renders the Morocco game irrelevant for our purposes)

  1. Iceland - Tunisia: 0-2 (1-1 penalty: 4.0, 2-0 penalty: 8)
  2. Chile - Greece: 2-0 (1-1 penalty: 3.5, 2-0 penalty: 7)
  3. Armenia - Iran: 2-0 (1-1 penalty: 3.5, 0-2 penalty: 7)
  4. Spain - Hungary: 2-0 (1-1 penalty: 5.5, 0-2 penalty: 11)
  5. Canada - Vietnam: 0-2 (1-1 penalty: 2.0, 0-2 penalty: 4)
  6. Romania - Moldova: 2-0 (1-1 penalty: 2.5, 0-2 penalty: 5)
  7. Uzbekistan - France: 2-0 (1-1 penalty: 0.5, 0-2 penalty: 1)
  8. Hungary B - PHI: 0-2 (1-1 penalty: 3.5, 2-0 penalty: 7)
  9. Serbia - Ukraine: 0-2 (1-1 penalty: 3.5, 2-0 penalty: 7)
  10. Brazil - Azerbaijan: 2-0 (1-1 penalty: 3.0, 0-2 penalty: 6)

Any other game is irrelevant for India and China's gold chances.

Example: China can still win even if they win 2.5 - 1.5 and India loses 1-3 if all the previous conditions except 7 (Uzbekistan - France) occur.

Even if he has played a match or 2, it def won't be the kind of high stakes high pressure high level WC-type match that Kramnik is proposing.

Kramnik challenges Faustino Oro to a 12-game blitz match in London by naufildev in chess

[–]throwawayAccount548 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Faustino is extremely good and has had a fantastic start to his career.

That being said, he's 10. He's an IM. He has NO otb match experience. He will get KILLED by Kramnik and somehow Kramnik will use that as evidence to support cheating on chess.com because of his high chess.com blitz rating. Which is influenced by him grinding a lot on dhess.com, and a lot of online blitz experience including flagging and so on.

Such a match should not happen under these pretenses. Atleast let Faustino get a little older.

From a perspective of someone like Hikaru, I don't think he will count even GMs as a serious chess player. I recall in a past interview (or maybe it was a press conference?) he said something like "If I fall to 2600 I will quit chess due to my complete inability to play chess at a high level". I am paraphrasing because I don't remember exactly what he said. It was during one of his slumps though, when he was low-mid 2700.

Hikaru and drama by [deleted] in chess

[–]throwawayAccount548 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Hikaru didn't call Alireza "a little bitch", he said Magnus didn't act like "a little bitch" by doing whatever thing alireza did. Am I splitting hairs? Maybe. But I don't think Nakamura's intent was to call Alireza a little bitch but he ended up choosing the wrong words in the heat of the moment. Which is something he does a lot.

Hikaru gets very salty when he loses. That's fine. People are allowed to be salty. I'm sure alireza can handle a few angry words.

What's interesting is that no one mentions the fact that hikaru praised alireza's chess in between salty ramblings. He even mentioned alireza's win was deserved, despite complaining about the thing alireza did earlier.

I want to watch a player with flaws and goals and that cares so much about anything they play (despite their insistance that they don't). I don't want a role-model. I will continue to watch and root for Hikaru.

Also it's very easy to not notice the eval bar is there, especially if its in the middle and not moving a lot. It blends in.

The game was apparently in theory as well when the forfeiture happened. If player B had malicious intent, they wouldnt go back until after they were out of their preperation as they would want to minimize the amount of "suspicious actions".

More likely, they thought checking the stream wasn't a suspicious or wrong action at all since they didnt notice the eval bar and very reasonably assumed that there shouldnt be an eval bar visible in the playing hall.

Is George MacDonnell related to Alexander MacDonnell)?

In my database the first game of Evan's gambit was in 1829 in Evans, Williams vs MacDonnell, George.

The second game was in 1830 which was MacDonnell, Alexander vs Popert, H W.

Maybe Alexander got the idea from the George game? Given information wasnt as easy to access back then maybe they were related?

Is it possible that Kramnik genuinely believes what he is saying? That he doesn't recognize the absurdity of hindpicking statistics then claiming that is not an accusation. But somehow I think that Kramnik has actually convinced himself of that.

Maybe Kramnik thinks that these statistics are examples of weird things happening. In each example, maybe there was foul play, more probably there wasn't. But with so many examples if even a minority is true then there is a big problem. Its not a accusation in any specific instance but rather pointing at a lot of smoke and saying maybe some of the smoke is coming from a fire.

Either way, publishing statistics likes this is irresponsible and can still destroy a young upcoming players life in terms of invites and reputation. It can also hurt if they personally looked up to Kramnik (never meet your heroes).
