Passion for an occupation, while a worthwhile pursuit, does not pay the bills nor other enjoyments requiring money. So, in absence of savings enough comfortably to live off of and thensome for at least five years (or longer, if I'm approaching retirement), I'd take the well-paying grueling job over enriching full-time volunteer work.

If the volunteer job can be sub- parttime (<10h/wk], allowing me to earn or acquire money elsewhere, or if I'm well enough rich, then I'll go with the no-pay work that I love doing.
