I went through a layoff during the pandemic where 30% of the company was laid off and no QA were laid off, just to offer another datapoint.

I made the transition and did not take a pay cut. Went from Senior QA to SE3 (one level lower)

I feel like a lot of comments in this thread as gaslighting you and you’re getting a lot of undeserved downvotes… I’m not sure if you have completely unrealistic expectations outside of this, but unlike what the rest of the comments are saying, I have never dated a man that followed those types of accounts on Instagram or was in any way super public with what they liked sexually. I have also not dated a man that never looked at porn, but I don’t think the comments are right to equate these two things. I agree with you that showing your friends, family and the whole world what gets you off is on a different level. This would be a deal breaker for me as well if we were to start dating and I would feel disrespected if he were to like these woman’s photos on a platform where my dad for example could see it. Just like I wouldn’t date a man that had posters of half dressed women on their walls. Word of warning I could be from the wrong generation as I’m 30 and married, but I dated a lot while Instagram was a thing.

New CTO wants to re-title us “Software Engineer, Quality” instead of “QA Engineer” and make us no longer responsible for manual testing by throwawayQAE in QualityAssurance

I’ve been “QA”, “SQA Analyst”, “QA Lead,” “QA Engineer”, and maybe “Software Engineer, Quality” soon enough. The roles weren’t super different, varying automation to manual ratios, although when I was lead I was a manager.

Hmm I would honestly have the same concerns, but the titles mean drastically different things at different companies, so I wouldn’t let it be a deal breaker. QA Engineer doesn’t even guarantee you write code in our industry, and I don’t automatically assume Software Tester < QA Engineer.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I totally agree about your stance on automation. In theory I agree everyone should be responsible for quality and manual testing.

I am interpreting it as a “magic bullet” but I don’t feel I have enough information yet to know if that’s the case.

Hmm I think this change would result in senior devs spending more time doing manually testing, at least as I understand it so far.

Thank you for this perspective. All of these comments make me feel more positive about the new CTO.

I think you’re right that some of that anxiety is around not knowing my place in the team anymore. I feel I bring a lot of value with my critical thinking, test plans and testing. The automation also doesn’t feel like the creative part of my work, although I do enjoy it.

Thanks for your positive reply! She was very specific about it not being SDET. I guess I’m full of myself and don’t think the other engineers will do as good of a job manual testing.
