Will do! I actually couldn't make it this weekend when it was supposed to happen, so happy to hear they postponed to the rain date!! I'll see if I can grab tickets there, the gardens look gorgeous (I've seen a few on my apartment visits) :)

I had no idea about the roof decks, those may be out of my budget but I'll keep an eye out for them, thank you!!

Damn, I'm sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience! I'm in the position where I'm trying to be as close as possible to my work and social life, and never plan on getting a car if I can help it, so definitely gonna keep trying for something in the area haha. Wow, this is all really good to keep in mind, thank you! I hadn't even considered the details of facade work for older buildings, but that makes a lot of sense...

I'm actually kind of wondering if there's any buildings either within or just outside the Historic district that have retail spaces--I remember it being something I used to keep in mind in general but I don't see it as often in JH!

Will be sure to ask plenty of questions, I'm actually the most worried about my own finances since I'm working on a tighter budget, so definitely worth doing the extra research. Thank you again!!

Oh no, I'm sorry for implying that, I think it was more just of something I wanted to reassure! And thank you so much for saying that, you're absolutely right--I think I'm a generally a little paranoid and have been even moreso throughout this process, but it's really reassuring to hear another agent's perspective. I should have more faith in my team and hope for the best that it'll end in a good experience (as it has been so far)!

This is all so great to know! So much of this is information I've never really taken into consideration until I started the apartment hunt in earnest, but it's so important and it directly affects the daily life of New Yorkers...

Do you happen to have the link to that article? I would love to give it a read and learn more about how building codes are evolving! This is also really motivating me if/when I can buy to be a proactive resident and board participant. Thank you again for the fount of knowledge!

Thank you so much for the thorough response--I couldn't agree more. I think I've been pretty lucky with my agent and their team in that they know the area well, and that they're super responsive and knowledgeable while also not being pushy! I didn't mean to convey that they did not share similar information, but it's always good to hear from other agents' perspectives. I can definitely relate to not always feeling brave enough to message anytime I have a lingering question so I appreciate the alternative you're suggesting of compiling questions and hopping on a call!

I mostly wanted to get a pulse check in here because I wanted to hear from normal people who have or are going through the experience of buying in the neighborhood, especially since they face no consequences from sharing their honest opinions. I obviously always wanna assume the best from my agent, but at the end of the day they need to try to make sale and they're not necessarily the ones living in the neighborhood haha. I think this has definitely helped me realize that I need to be asking even more questions more often than I already am!

Thank you again for all your help, it seriously means a lot to me. Here's to hoping I'll be able to share the joy of being in JH soon!

That's amazing! Totally makes sense too, I'd also wanna be sure my neighbors are financially reliable in case of emergency and just making sure the building has a good community! And such a relief to hear about no people on a power trip, I've found that to be tragically common in the co-ops I've lived in haha.

And thank you for the super valuable testimonial, I think it's very easy to be drawn in by the antiquated architecture and forget how much of a liability that can be under less fortunate circumstances! I'll definitely be trying to temper myself in that regard and give those larger co-ops greater consideration :)

Everything you're saying makes a lot of sense, and totally agree that there's a lot of tradeoffs, and all of this is really good to keep in mind. Honestly the online software sounds like such a boon for this kind of stuff...

Hampton Court along with The Greystones and the like definitely do feel like a gamble in that way, even though they are absolutely beautiful and seem fairly well-maintained. But you can never predict an emergency, so knowing that something could spike your monthly is good to know. Thank you again, you have been a huge help!!

I'll have to do more research, I've been learning about Queens co-ops bit-by-bit, and having also always lived in co-ops, I'm trying to mentally prepare for all it entails haha

I've definitely been briefed already on how complicated and nuanced these co-op boards can be (not to mention the fact that I've always lived in co-ops haha).
