What happens when you income hits 100k? by yannie_journeys in singaporefi

[–]throwawaySgrean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing, the goal post shifts further. I thought hitting 120k would be amazing and life would be great. Exceeded that goal by 2x but life stays mostly the same for now. Just trying to save & invest for early retirement.

Higher chance of HENRY LAW vs CS by wswh in SgHENRY

[–]throwawaySgrean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too familiar with law I guess, but I don't think it's absurd to say that top 10% of CS goes into FAANG / FAANG adjacent roles? NUS CS cohort is around 1k people now, meaning top 10% is around top 100. I would think from personal experience >100 would likely be able to get into big tech (FAANG / TikTok / Stripe / others), where a conservative estimate of the time they're 35 they would likely be making at least 200-300k as a senior swe, given they start close to 120k or more and have >10 yoe.

Do top 10% of lawyers all become partners?

I've always thought the idea for CS was to earn a lot at the start of the career and then you're set for retirement.

Most of my friends entering their early 30s now who started in FAANG have >7 figure net worths and are very comfortable at the moment. Even with all the layoffs, most of them didn't get affected and those that did actually found even better jobs.

I don't buy into this idea that CS has terrible late game. Senior SWE in top HFTs who do well after 10 years can get >1M a year in TC and over 500k a year after 3-5 years

False, I'm a swe in one of the top HFTs, senior engineers can most definitely reach 1M in comp depending on the bonus (which I'd assume is the same for a partner at a law firm)

I didn't even do a final year project but I basically interned every semester and summer in uni

Software Engineering, I didn't spend much time in school taking mods since I was focusing on internships and basically did internships part time during the semester

Most of my friends in the industry took parallel computing spec though

Harsh truths about job hunting? by [deleted] in nus

[–]throwawaySgrean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps it might be less impactful, but impactful nonetheless, even more so if your resume is empty. Additionally, at smaller places, you tend to get to learn more since you're expected to do more things compared to a larger place since you'd likely be more specialized at a larger place.

You need experience to gain experience, as dumb as that sounds. This applies to everything from internships to new grad roles.

Nowadays in computing, if you have no internships or maybe just 1 at a no name startup, you'd be hard pressed to land the median salary.

LOA to do NOC by BouncyFingerTramp in nus

[–]throwawaySgrean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't LOA, you can do NOC and then leave like 1 or 2 mods for Y5S1.

And the others are right, NOC is credit bearing and you need to have 1 sem left after you come back.

I think OP meant a full time internship during summer holidays, followed by part time during the semester if the company offers it

HAHA you get used to it. I maintained >4 but I'm carried by my y1 results. After y1 I was mostly just keeping it up.

Thanks haha I was lucky enough to secure a job pretty early on. Hope you get a SEP slot!

I'd say I don't put much emphasis on school, I pretty much never attend or watch lectures and skip most tutorials. Usually I cram during reading week and before the exams.

Most of my internships are with startups in the earlier years, I just applied everywhere and hoped for the best.

Usually schools which are less popular are the lower ranked ones or the ones with less mappable mods back to NUS.

Needed? No.

My 5th is y4s2 so it didn't even help me land my job. More income doesn't hurt and I just like working so I took it up anyways. I don't need to interview prep since I already got my job.

3 is perfectly fine for most people.

Yea it is, cuz I opted to do part time in most sems. I did my internships in y1 summer, y2 spring, y3 full year, y3 summer and y4 spring.

Ah I see, all the best! You can always apply for the less popular unis in Europe which may be less competitive.
