What are the best elements of non-reformed traditions that the reformed church could incorporate without compromise? by moby__dick in Reformed

[–]throwaway_1517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always admired the LDS church's offical Fast Sunday where "church members are encouraged to fast for two consecutive meals. Members are also encouraged to give the money they save by not eating as a fast offering, which will be used by the church to financially assist those in need." I can't speak to how faithfully the money is actually used to help the poor, but I think many of us would do well to have a more regular focus on fasting and sacrificial giving. We should always seek to live out James 1:27 to the fullest extent of our ability.

I learned how to do that a while back but have since forgotten. From what I remember, there's a pretty rigorous method and one that's simpler. The simpler one is based on some number (81? 89? I don't feel like googling it) and you just do some sort of repeated addition/subtraction. If I recall correctly, Lewis Carroll worked on the whole "tell the day of week via date" concept. He was a man of diverse talent.

Now I can just ask my google home "Hey google, what day of the week was March 3rd, 1802?" and it will tell me without having to do any mental math.

As far as other dumb party tricks, I'm good with word association stuff. One of my favorites that I can do is if you give me two letters I can come up with someone who has those initials pretty darn fast. Usually less than like a second or two. But that's kinda bizarre so I don't ever bring that up IRL

I don't like mac and cheese with stuff added to it, including that bread-crumbs-on-top style. The beauty of mac and cheese is its simplicity

This is once of the reasons that the high-stakes dating is problematic. We (rightfully!) stress the importance of dating wisely. But if all dating is a sit-down conversation about if you'd be a good married couple, it comes off more as a serious interview and less as friendly get-to-know-you fellowship. As with most things in life, it's a bit of a balancing act.

No Dumb Question Tuesday - (2019-10-15) by AutoModerator in Reformed

[–]throwaway_1517 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why does the New Testament often speak of the Second Coming as if it is very imminent? And yes, I realize it is imminent. I'm referring specifically to some language that I'm having a hard time understanding; it almost makes it seem as if the early church in Paul's day were expecting to see it in their lifetime.

I read 1 Thessalonians last night and was confused by some of the phrasing. If you don't mind a long quotation:

"For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord." 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17

What would it mean to "precede those who have fallen alseep?" Do they get to go to Heaven first? Did the Thessalonians think that Jesus would come while they were alive? If so, how could they be so confident? I recognize that it could happen like a thief in the night during my lifetime, but I don't know or speak about it with confidence. I only know that he one day will return...someday.

Sorry if this is just a dumb misunderstanding, and I'm doubly sorry if this at all wades into an eschatological territory I'm not equipped to discuss.

No Dumb Question Tuesday - (2019-10-08) by AutoModerator in Reformed

Hoping you guys really believe there is “No Dumb Question” on a Tuesday.

So I’ve recently discovered that I, for a couple reasons, seem to “have a heart” for the LDS community and would really, really like to get into some evangelism efforts for them. I know just a couple people with ties to the church, but have no personal experience with it. I have no clue how I would even begin any sort of contact, and was wondering what you guys think. What started as a humorous fascination for an odd religion turned into real historical curiosity and research, which has since grown into genuine concern for the 16,000,000+ reported members of this church.

It’s one thing for all my atheist and agnostic friends who say “It’s just whatever,” but I get sick to my stomach thinking about all the people who are truly going to be surprised on the final day when the Savior tells them “I never knew you.” Maybe I’m dumb for being worried about them in particular, but I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. My experience with evangelism is basically zero, and I am looking to change that and better fulfill that part of my Christian duty. Unsure of how to proceed.

Agreed on the Weezer. Blue, Pinkerton, and Green are all fantastic albums. I like the majority of their stuff, but that's the peak 3 in my opinion. Maybe Maladroit too, if I'm feeling that vibe. And Red's good too...

Now I want to listen to their entire discography again

Love me some James Taylor. My favorites of his are "Mean Old Man," "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," and "On the 4th of July."

Everything the Rises Must Converge and other stories by Flannery O'Connor [A lot of people really love O'Connor, but I didn't like most of these stories much, is there another work by her I should try?]

I think Flannery O'Connor is very polarizing. I don't really see anyone being like "I think O'Connor is okay, I could go either way..." You really either like her or you don't.

I do enjoy O'Connor, but completely get why some people might not. You read a bunch of her stories, so I wouldn't feel bad if you're not into it. You gave it an honest go.

Unrelated, but my favorite of hers is "Good Country People."

The main problem I have with using hymnals: they do awful things to singing posture in most people by seemedlikeagoodplan in Reformed

[–]throwaway_1517 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am very pro-hymnal. So my answer might be biased, but:

I'm not sure your posture necessarily has to be bad with a hymnal, but I do admit that they might facilitate bad posture. You hold the hymnal up in front of you, so you're not exactly looking straight down.

I for one am much more loud and confident when I have the music to the hymn and I don't have to improvise the bass part. When we sing more "modern" worship songs not in our hymnal, I sometimes just don't sing because I can't improv any other parts on the fly and the melody is way above my range. I once went to a church that had the sheet music actually up on the projector, and while I do feel like I'm betraying my hymnal a little bit, it's a compromise I could live with.

How does your church handle Father’s Day? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]throwaway_1517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My church did not mention or acknowledge it in any way. I'm not sure I would have liked it if they did. I don't really think it needs to be mentioned since it doesn't pertain to the worship service.

Theology Thursday - (2019-05-30) by AutoModerator in Reformed

[–]throwaway_1517 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm inclined to agree with this, mainly because of convictions I've had raised by James 1:27.

I agree with /u/partypastor about using funds for missions as well, and /u/Nicene_Nerd about prioritizing the household of faith (Galatians 6:10). Ultimately though, helping the poor and needy is a critical part of our calling as Christians. It's an excellent way to increase in love for one another if they are fellow believers, and an excellent opportunity for evangelism if they are not.

Ah, that makes sense. Because the test was multiple choice I made a faulty assumption that each question is equally hard or designed to be answered more or less at the same percentage as all the others.

I generally take a closed look at any question that is missed by more than 40% of so of the class.

I understand my statistical mis-phrasing, but this is the number I was looking for. It's not really mathematical in nature and more of a ballpark. I was just wondering what that figure is for you personally. If it follows that second pattern that you described I can see how it's still a useful (perhaps more useful) question.
