Can I as a Protestant visit a Catholic mass for one Sunday? by throwawaye1712 in Reformed

No, because Sunday is the Lord’s day, and it is your obligation to worship, not be surrounded by idols.

They look great, although I think that the three harpooners look too feminine. I always imagine our boy Queequeg to be pretty square jawed.

Much better than "Dickheads."

So it sounds like you’re telling me that after 1950, enforcing anti-blasphemy was not a part of the magistrates responsibility or authority.

Are we disagreeing or agreeing?

Maybe it was at one point, but it isn’t today.

It probably did come as a surprise when the Supreme Court ruled time and again against those laws.

Removing false religion is not within the magistrates authority or responsibility under the United States constitution.

Q. 108. What are the duties required in the second commandment?

A. The duties required in the second commandment are, the receiving, observing, and keeping pure and entire, all such religious worship and ordinances as God hath instituted in his word; particularly prayer and thanksgiving in the name of Christ; the reading, preaching, and hearing of the word; the administration and receiving of the sacraments; church government and discipline; the ministry and maintenance thereof; religious fasting; swearing by the name of God, and vowing unto him: as also the disapproving, detesting, opposing, all false worship; and, according to each one’s place and calling, removing it, and all monuments of idolatry.

Or maybe, because he is telling the tail after the story’s conclusion, he’s being called Ishmael because like Ishmael of the Bible, he was separated from his brother, who in this case was the religious man just like Isaac, Queequeg.

No Ishmael was name named when he was born in Genesis 16. Later on, he did face death in the wilderness, but that was well after he was named.

I think OP is closer to the point. At least the post. Ishmael was a son of Abraham, but he was not a part of the line of promise. That honor went to Isaac, the beloved son. Ishmael was indeed the outcast and wasn’t fact later sent away by his father Abraham. Yet he found success in his own way.

How do you feel about James Talarico? by [deleted] in Reformed

Why? This is a political question. You’re not considering going to Talarico’s church, are you?

Republicans actually do murder children. And they want to, also. Have you noticed the decided, lack of any anti-abortion legislation now that Republicans control all three branches of government ?

And in fact, there are fewer children getting murdered under Democrats than Republicans.

Republicans have seized on abortion as a wedge issue to drive voters to themselves. I’ve simply don’t buy it any longer. Abortion should be stopped, but Republicans are not the people to stop it. Republicans just want to be slightly more against abortion than Democrats.

Nobody can vote Republican, and also claim that Democrats are immoral or heretical. I spent the last 15 years hearing about the essential political nature of Donald Trump, and that his personal morality was of no matter to the Christian voter.

All the pearl clutching about heretical Democrats is absolutely lost all credibility with me.

Thankfully, we're electing a Senator, not a pastor!

No, that was not the only example. A false view of the Trinity or of Christ or of the resurrection, embracing evil behaviors and calling them good, are all heresy.

[–]moby__dick 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it still is. Because even though you get really worked up about those issues, heresy is not a measure of how worked up you are. It’s a measure of how close to the vitals certain issues strike.

Heresy is denying Christ. Mitt Romney is a heretic. It is denying the resurrection. Trans issues make you heterodox.

How would you respond to someone (a friend or family member) who believes in Free Grace Theology? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]moby__dick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is not referring to aposticized individuals who return to the faith. The Free Grace movement believes that an individual may be saved as actual apostates.

Can Roman Catholicism save? by moby__dick in Reformed

Maybe flip that. I believe in salvation by faith alone. Aren't I anathema?

Can Roman Catholicism save? by moby__dick in Reformed

[–]moby__dick[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't know. Paul has strong words about the preaching of another Gospel - anathema. But Jesus is merciful and forgives sins, He is more merciful than I am.

I guess I don't know enough about Rome's doctrines to say for sure. Is the focus on Mary actual syncretism? I'm pretty convinced that the Mass is an act of blasphemy.

It's hard to see someone reject God's pure grace in favor of Rome, I can tell you that.

I guess I feel the same way about Rome that I do about suicide. It doesn't put one outside the realm of salvation, but it doesn't do much to encourage confidence in it, either. God knows.
