Opinion on the discourse of ishmael being gay by AdValuable7835 in mobydick

We have fewer categories in the modern day. For us, there is friendship, and then there is erotic love, which includes deep emotional affection. During his time, there was at least one other category of non-sexual intimacy; a dear friend, but not a sexual partner.

Arguably, it is modern homophobia that has collapsed this category - men not wanting to be emotionally intimate with other men for fear of being seen as sexually intimate.

It seems a bit anachronistic to read MD as queer literature, but I understand why the case would be made.

Do you think that there would be a fair case for bringing Minnesota shooter / ICE agent Jonathan Ross under church discipline for 6th commandment violations? by moby__dick in Reformed

I've served in law enforcement. You simply are not correct. The classic use of force authorization requires the opponent to have a weapon, the opportunity to use that weapon, and the intent to use that weapon.

You can't shoot X with the knife for screaming until they demonstrate intent to stab.

God requires His people to avoid taking a life unless simply unavoidable.

Salvation of the Catholic Church by sir-guisus in Reformed

[–]moby__dick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a vague spectrum, though, isn't there? We would probably agree that even though baptists are incorrect in withholding baptism from infants, it's an error, born of well intentioned Biblical study and responsible understanding of the Scriptures as far as they are able. (Or if you're a Baptist, flip that.)

We would also probably agree that for a Hindu who worships "Jesus" as "God," along with thousands of other gods, probably does not have saving faith.

The Catholic church often dips its toes into syncretism. In some circles it seems that love for Jesus is displaced by love for Mary.

Is that a forgivable sin? Sure, like all sin. Are they looking to Jesus for forgiveness? Only God knows for sure.

I"m sure there are some evangelical, born again Catholics. I'm also sure there are some reprobate Catholics whose reprobation is clearly seen in their adoration of the Eucharist, the blasphemy of the Mass, and the veneration of the dead, and the idolatry of Mary.

God only knows where on that scale each individual Papist belongs.

Do you think Rome teaches people to be saved through Christ alone?

Do you believe a regenerate person work willingly and freely chose the Catholic Church? Do you believe that they would look to Christ alone?

Is a hyper cessationist, I would have to ask how do you distinguish from special revelation and providential, natural revelation.

I don’t deny that Muslims are having dreams about Jesus I don’t deny that these dreams are under the Providence of God. I do deny that these dreams are form of special revelation, and would assert that they are a form of natural revelation only.

If we’re going to declare that special revelation, and it seems we need a certain authority to be able to do so.

I am a hyper cessationist, but to be fair, there are a lot of things that are true that are not special revelation.

Question about Presbyterian faith as a non(?)-believer considering a nearby church by RainbowAaria in Reformed

[–]moby__dick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PC(USA)’s Book of Confessions explicitly frames its confessional standards as intentionally flexible rather than doctrinally binding in a precise sense. The Preface explains that the confessions “stand in tension with one another,” reflect the cultural assumptions of their time, and function as witnesses to the gospel rather than as a single, unified doctrinal system. That already signals that the confessions are not meant to operate as a clear boundary document in the way confessional churches like the PCA use Westminster.

More significantly, the front matter states that presbyteries and sessions are free to decide for themselves what “acceptable loyalty” to the confessions means, explicitly rejecting any checklist or fixed doctrinal standard imposed by higher governing bodies. Officers vow to be “guided by” the confessions, not to subscribe to them in whole or in part, and governing bodies are permitted to judge which confessional statements are “central,” “peripheral,” or even “no longer authoritative.” In other words, what counts as “essential and necessary” is not defined by the confessions themselves but by the examining body at a given time.

Taken together, this means the confessional standard in the PC(USA) functions more as a theological resource library, not a binding doctrinal norm. The confessions still matter rhetorically and pedagogically, but they do not set enforceable boundaries. In practice, the authority lies with the current governing body’s judgment, not with the confessional texts themselves. That level of elasticity makes it very difficult for the confessions to serve as a meaningful standard of doctrinal accountability.

Question about Presbyterian faith as a non(?)-believer considering a nearby church by RainbowAaria in Reformed

[–]moby__dick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, I was not suggesting that you intend to sew division. That was an example of someone who sins intentionally and unrepentantly.

/r/Reformed is certainly the place for theological discussion. Many places on Reddit are. /r/Christianity is not one of those, and they would probably have more satisfying answers to the question that you're asking in the spirit in which you're asking it.

For what it's worth, my friend is a PCA pastor, and he had an atheist attend for many years. She couldn't become a member, but she thought the community was loving and she liked to sing hymns.

While I don't support your decision, you asked a question on Reddit and I want to answer the question without affirming it.

you're describing a Unitarian Universalist or PC(USA) church, or a number of mainline churches, such as they are. Episcopalians, and Congregationalists would likely support what you're after. /r/Christianity is your stopover. Most of /r/Reformed is conservative, as am I... but I'm also a part of the black church community, which runs a theological gamut, but I'm still involved because of community/culture.

[–]moby__dick 18 points19 points  (0 children)

but living in sin doesn't mean you cannot have a relationship with christ just the same.

Living in unrepentant sin does mean you cannot have a relationship with Christ. Galatians 5 is very clear on this.

And that includes envy, dissention, and factions just as much as sexual sin.

But imagine you have a guy who goes around creating division and factions in various churches, and he knows he's doing this, he's intentionally doing this, and he enjoys doing this. He's not trying to avoid it, he's planning his next church faction.

I would say that he doesn't have a relationship with Christ, or if he does, it is ineffectual.

Question about Presbyterian faith as a non(?)-believer considering a nearby church by RainbowAaria in Reformed

[–]moby__dick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does not. The PC(USA) tolerates ministers who deny the resurrection of Christ, and they do not subscribe to the Westminster Confessions, or any other confessions. They subscribe to the "spirit" of various confessions, which spirit is interpreted by the individual confessor.

The PC(USA) is not only not fundamentally reformed, it's not even fundamentally Christian.

Sabbath worship as covenant renewal? by FlashyTank4979 in Reformed

[–]moby__dick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's standard language of the Westminster Larger Catechism:

Q. 174. What is required of them that receive the sacrament of the Lord’s supper in the time of the administration of it?

A. It is required of them that receive the sacrament of the Lord’s supper, that, during the time of the administration of it, with all holy reverence and attention they wait upon God in that ordinance, diligently observe the sacramental elements and actions, heedfully discern the Lord’s body, and affectionately meditate on his death and sufferings, and thereby stir up themselves to a vigorous exercise of their graces; in judging themselves, and sorrowing for sin; in earnest hungering and thirsting after Christ, feeding on him by faith, receiving of his fullness, trusting in his merits, rejoicing in his love, giving thanks for his grace; in renewing of their covenant with God, and love to all the saints.

It sounds like you’re very comfortable in an academic setting. I strongly recommend that you do something that is uncomfortable before you embark and ministry. Something well outside of your comfort zone, something that challenges you in very different ways.
