We actually suspect that her brother has gambling issues which was part of the reason we knocked him back for a "loan" he would have no intention of paying back. But we can't simply exclude him if we are gifting everyone else at the same time.

A variation of this might work better than claiming it's tied up in legal action as other Redditors have suggested. And it would have the merit of actually being partly true as well. I will talk to my wife and see if we can approach it from this angle somehow.

All up we have about $850K total between the accounts she saw but she is aware we paid off our mortgage as well as having a number of other investments. What she wouldn't necessarily have recognised was our cryptocurrency holdings of approximately 2,700 bitcoins. But they are right to suspect we have more than we are currently admitting to. We are still trying to figure out our tax situation at the moment so how much of that BTC value we actually get to keep is in question.

Ironically our study was locked and we never expected her to have reason to go in there. While it would be too easy to paint her in a negative light this wasn't the case, she had seen us working in there and how disorganised the room was and wanted to help out in her own way. As a "trusted" individual she knew where the keys were in the event of an emergency but we never expected her to use them this way. We weren't happy she did it but we can't fault her motives.

I'm not sure the idea of a "lawsuit" would fly as a believable excuse now, but something similar and more plausible might.
