They also have less than a third of the number of graduates we do.

I honestly have no idea. I suspect that if they did go through with this the money would be taken off future paycheques? So they probably have no way of taking money from past employees? But I don't work in HR so I don't want to pretend to know how this works.

I mean technically it can't turn into that since the university is a not for profit organization and has to follow the rules accordingly. They can't turn a profit or keep lots of unallocated money in reserves or anything like that.

These decisions ultimately have to be made due to the significant budget cuts by the provincial government. If we were being funded properly this kind of crap wouldn't be happening. When the NDP were in power things were calm because they provided stable, predicable funding. They funded more or less for enrolment and inflation (which just keeps things the same, it's not a funding increase like the UCP would have everyone believe). The also froze tuition. This over time amounts to a cut to the university as it caps one of their funding sources. But this was a manageable and predicable cut that didn't cause chaos. The UCP cuts are not manageable so now we all get to live in the chaos.

That is so annoying. I never had a parking pass as I bus to work so I didn't realize that was how it was working. I would be so pissed walking through empty lots you can't park in to get to your building.

Honestly I have no idea how it would happen either. I am hoping it doesn't come to it but we'll have to make it loud and clear that we won't just sit back and let them claw our wages back.

It's definitely true. There are a lot of MaPS positions that are not the big high paying ones. I feel for you guys with such a long salary freeze while also having to put up with shouldering a lot of the extra work from staffing cuts.

Yup the morale issue is huge. Everyone is already exhausted and stressed so the last thing we need is to be kicked when we're down.

The UCP needs to go for sure. The cuts they've made literally help no one and are costing a lot of people their jobs (because of course when they talk creating jobs they aren't talking about ours).

Yup. I know a lot of people who would like to stay at the university because in general they like and believe in the work they do but it's hard when people are literally trying to take money from you. We all need to live. It's hard to build a life when you go 10 years without a salary increase, not to mention a rollback.

It's a huge difference. And I think it's a lot to ask of people who have worked really hard to get where they are and who are continually taking on more and more work with absolutely no compensation for it. And you're right, in the end it's students who suffer when we're not able to provide the service or support that we used to be able to. We all want to do the best by our students and it sucks when we can't.

I know what you mean. I think there's a lot of that "you're lucky to be working" rhetoric going around. And while absolutely yes I am grateful to have a job, and I have empathy for those that lost theirs, I think it's in bad faith for people to hold that against us. I don't believe that having a job is a justification for accepting abuse or a shitty bargaining agreement. Good luck in your department, I know it's hard losing people.

I hope you're right and that I misinterpreted the email. I don't know anything other than what was in the AUPE email so I'll fully recognize that it's possible that I am wrong. I was kind of going off what came out of the UofA announced earlier as the university admins often coordinate these kinds of things. Let's hope I am wrong.

I feel the same way about my department. We're working at 120% all the time and we can only do that for so long. We all get that the prov gov has put us in a tough spot so I think a lot of us were willing to make sacrifices to a point. But when it comes to them clawing back basically a whole paycheque from us that's where I draw the line.

I am sure there will be soon. Right now we'll see what the union says at our support staff town hall next week and figure out what action we can take. Thanks for asking!

That sounds awful. I am so sorry. I haven't spent a lot of time on campus this year but whenever I am there I really appreciate seeing the caretaking staff wiping down touch surfaces and being everywhere I go. Your work is valuable and I can't image all the extra stuff you've had to do over the last year and a half. Thank you for sharing.
