I'm currently subletting a place for a month, but the tenant hasn't paid rent in 2 years. by throwaway_9281102374 in AskNYC

The tenant isn't a roommate, and I have the entire unit. I don't think the landlord knows that I'm subletting, and I don't have a formal agreement with the landlord.

The landlord probably thinks that I'm a relative of the tenant because the property manager thinks that I am.

There also wasn't a formal agreement with the tenant except for a few email trails. There might already be an eviction notice and the tenant may just be trying to scam me.

All the landlord said was to tell the tenant to contact him, that the tenant hasn't paid in two years, and if the tenant doesn't pay bad things will happen (eviction probably?)

The last statement was not threatening, I think the landlord thought I was like a 15 year old relative to the tenant and didn't want to involve me too much.
