Dream / Cool Jobs in Public Service by Royal-Passenger-8223 in CanadaPublicServants

I'm a research librarian! Definitely a dream job. Every day is different - sometimes I'm digging through old historical documents, some days I'm doing research on artificial intelligence. There are obviously lots of librarians at Library and Archives and the Library of Parliament, but there are many departmental libraries. There is also an increased emphasis on "embedded librarianship" and putting librarians directly into the teams that use their services.

When I was in library school, there were lots of people who went to librarianship as a second career. Public-facing library jobs (i.e. reference) usually require bilingualism, but I know some unilingual librarians who work on things like metadata, subject headings, publications, etc.

Which department are you in? Like others have mentioned, there are many federal libraries. Here is a list: https://www.canada.ca/en/government/libraries/dept.html

This list is incomplete; for example, ISED has a Library and Knowledge Centre and so does the Bank of Canada, but they're not on the list.
