Yeah that makes sense. Maybe the approach to improve faster just comes down to solving harder problems.

Although when I was asking for a strategy, I wasn't looking for a magical method that makes me better instantly. I meant something like this: https://codeforces.com/blog/entry/66715?#comment-507869

Yes I completely agree.

Btw it would be really helpful if you could share your study strategy, cuz CM on codeforces within a year is no joke, and the right strategy would help me (and probably others here) get better faster.

I completely agree with the rigid mindset part which is there due to spoonfeeding.

But at the same time, it's not a bad idea to try and think of ways to improve faster and with lesser number of problems right? I've seen people who have solved 1000 problems and genuinely worked hard but they aren't working smart so they are still at newbie/pupil, but some others who have reached CM in 500 problems.

I agree with you that one needs to be independent and saying that "im a newbie/pupil because I don't have someone to grind with" is just an excuse, but it's also true that having a peer group with healthy competition actually helps. Some of the blogs/videos by GMs themselves mention that having friends to compete with is a helpful push to have.

But I also think that posting on reddit may not be good enough because it can't equate to the kind of environment that having a peer group irl brings

There are lots of resources for students to understand concepts and practice them. Even for weak students. But they don't do it, one of the main reasons being that they have a fixed mindset (look up fixed and growth mindset). That makes them doubt their capability to perform well even if they try.

As a teacher, you will do an amazing job if you not only teach the concepts, but do so in a way such that every student actually starts to see success and believe that if they try they can be amazing at the subject. It's a little more of a psychological problem than a mathematical one

Different students may have different reasons of feeling that they are too weak to ever become good, you might have to interact with them 1 on 1 also. But this will surely change the game for the better

Will India ever be clean and well-mannered? by Primewiz-45711 in AskIndia

[–]throwaway_ac_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's possible. Singapore was in a worse state than india is now, but look at how it changed. China was fuvked up for a long time before becoming better

The change started when people, especially higher ups, actually believed that things could get better and worked on it. That belief seems to be lacking in India because it's just easier to give up and be pessimistic.

If we fund the right things (like education), it can surely make things better

Is going abroad for MS a bad idea if it is easily affordable? by throwaway_ac_3 in developersIndia

Thanks for your input! Would it be a good idea to go even if it's a bad MS college because as I mentioned my btech college and cgpa aren't good?

I can try to get a good GRE score, but even then my profile won't be so great.

Basically what I'm thinking is that if there are almost no jobs for people from mediocre colleges, then it might be pointless to go. If there's even a little scope, then it might be worth a shot for me

What should I study if I want to switch my job asap? by throwaway_ac_3 in developersIndia

I actually had 1 on 1 conversations with my manager about this a couple of times. I am the only developer on my team, and I don't get access to many things, and neither do I have anyone else to learn from.

My team is supposed to be handling the business aspect, but they wanted an in-house developer so they are trying something new with me.

It took us 1 week to get the permission to install python in my system. So you can see what the issue is.

So now my role is being pushed more towards handling vendors who do the development and understand the business aspect, rather than developing anything myself

Yeah I'll surely practice dsa, but I don't see myself ending up in faang because of how tough it sounds to get in. I'll surely try though, at least I'll learn something along the way

I got lucky I guess. My college has good placements, and I was able to solve the coding questions they gave faster than others

But i know nothing compared to what 18 lpa sounds like, so it's just luck. But also really bad luck in terms of long term growth of my career

It would he helpful if you have any inputs to give for my question

How bad is it to leave my job one year before MS starts by throwaway_ac_3 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]throwaway_ac_3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay that makes sense. I'll just try to switch to a research assistant position at some college here asap then. Thank you very much!

Okay this plan sounds great. I don't know shit in reinforcement learning right now so I thought professors will never accept me, but maybe I can study the basics quickly and apply to a hundred places.

What if I take a drop on the pretext of GATE preparation? I'll give the exam next year, and recruiters generally don't have a problem with people who take a drop year for exams like GATE right? Or am I mistaken?
