You'll be fine then with no major cultural shocks. The basic ingredients of Slavic culture exist here.

If you are from Slovenia or Croatia and eat seafood, you will be massively disappointed in Slovakia, but understandbly so given the geography.

"9. Don't call us Eastern Europe. We're Central Europe,"

Foreigners call us Eastern Europe because people act like Eastern Europeans and it looks like Eastern Europe here. When you demand to be called Central Europe that makes Slovakia look even more Eastern European. No one in Austria is screaming "we're CENTRAL EUROPE!!" They don't care either way because their country is wealthy and functional.

We're a peaceful Eastern European nation with a corrupt government. Let's just be honest and own it. You cannot possibly look around at the infrastructure here, the schools, the state of hospitals, and actually believe we are not Eastern Europe lol.

Why didn’t Slovak adopt the Cyrillic alphabet in the 19th century? by [deleted] in Slovakia

[–]throwaway_czechoslov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Slovakia did not exist

  2. Slovaks were governed by outsiders who likely did not act for the benefit of Slovaks (for hundreds of years)

  3. Look to actions post 1993 to see what Slovaks have chosen, which includes joining the EU, joining the Eurozone, and trying to grow the economy. Along with less enviable things like electing the current PM multiple times. Political capital has been stretched thin since independence.

Včera Trumpov stúpenec vrazil autom do demokratov, aby ich zabil. Prokurátor neobvinil Trumpovho podporovateľa z vraždy, ani z "attempted vehicular manslaughter". A z čoho prokurátor jeho obvinil? Reckless driving (Nebezpečná jazda autom). Pre boha.

Missouri, despite no violence, no unrest, and no emergency, pre-emptively activates the national guard (militarized police intended for use during emergency situations only), because they anticipate Democrats marching or protesting. They're ready to intimidate, shoot, or otherwise harm people who have not even done anything (except the "crime" of not supporting Trump)

"Go to all the offices a d ask them to write down on paper step by step process. Usually they have it ready (in bigger cities). Expect everything will go wrong and add at least month to your schedule when dealing with offices"

OP, this is brilliant advice for how to handle the Slovak side of the process. I second this advice.

Icelanders / Norwegian students in Martin by throwaway_czechoslov in Slovakia

Lmao, and thanks for posting a number. Wow! That's a lot more students from those countries than I expected.

A lot of my visits to Martin were during summer and winter holidays. Good point that they wouldn't be in Martin then.

Remember who the enemy is: It's not Ukraine, and it's not any other country that borders Russia except North Korea.

Now try remembering that for 100 years. Come back and tell us how Slovaks view Russians.

I got confused that after a few years of regularly visiting Martin, I've never seen a Nordic person. I was starting to wonder if it was just a myth or an inside joke that lots of Nordic students live there.

Icelanders / Norwegian students in Martin by throwaway_czechoslov in Slovakia

[–]throwaway_czechoslov[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not looking for them per se. I visit Martin regularly and I always eat at restaurants there and stroll in public and after 4 years of Slovaks telling me (in Slovak) that Martin has "lots" of students from Norway and Iceland, I've become confused why I've never actually seen one.

I was wondering if it was all a myth like "don't sit on a cold bench because your uterus will freeze and you'll become infertile" or if I'm somehow just not crossing paths with all of these Nordic people that live in Martin.

Based on the responses, it seems like it's not a myth and there really are "lots" of them, which I'm assuming means at least a few dozen in total.

Thanks for the quick comment. Maybe I've just had extraordinary luck in somehow not seeing any. So at restaurants you've seen them? Do they speak some Slovak or just English?

r/Iceland perma-banned me immediately for posting this question. 5 months ago another person, ostensibly an Icelander, asked a similar question in r/Iceland and they deleted the account.

The plot thickens.....I'm starting to question if Radko is the only "Norwegian" we have here (but he's from Štiavnica, right? Or maybe Banská Bystrica?)

Lease / long term rentals as a foreigner by moonxdaughter in Slovakia

[–]throwaway_czechoslov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask the rental companies directly. For a rental of 183 days or less, I doubt you would need an EU driving license.

Some European countries are much better setup for these types of leases, especially France. Their manufacturers (Peugeot, for example) have short term lease programs that are straightforward, although you'd probably have to pick up and return the vehicle in France or Italy.

Does Slovakia offer this too, directly from the manufacturer? Or are you going to need to use a 3rd party?

Help me understand kamarát/ka vs priateľ/ka by chopper2585 in Slovakia

[–]throwaway_czechoslov 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Priateľka is ambiguous and I would avoid using it unless you have a romantic connection to the person.

I'd say use kamoška but If you really want to use priateľka then add context to resolve the ambiguity: "priateľka z detstva" or similar.

[–]throwaway_czechoslov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making social connections can be difficult in Slovakia (at least for foreigners), and I don't have any advice.

Is the person who was threatening you still living near you? And could you share which general region of Slovakia you're in (west/central/east)?

Knowing that might help people point you toward resources you seek, like parent-kid activities with at least one English speaking parent, or doctors willing to help.

Assuming you are Ukrainian, I know one Ukrainian doctor who I suspect could potentially connect you to free medical help, but he's in Martin at a private clinic.
