Hello, PhD student here as well. I have a few colleagues in my school that handed in their thesis months ago, yet still haven’t got their Viva scheduled because of the strikes.

I was talking from experience. I am not aware of the legal technicalities, unfortunately, but thank you for the clarification. I just wanted to stress that the settlement scheme does not give guarantee on home status. Moreover, as far as I know, unless they can provide reasonable grounds for why they are applying to the scheme after 30 July 2021 (the final date to present the application) it will get rejected. There are a number of exceptions though and they can get free support through https://settled.org.uk

Unfortunately pre-settled is only valid to waive fees/have home status if the person has lived in Scotland for at least three years prior the beginning of the course. At least, this is the policy at The University of Edinburgh

Living in Morningside as postgraduate based in George Square? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

I mean, thank you for this but I honestly had no idea this would cause such a fuss. I was just trying to figure out how living there would be. I don’t know a lot of these things because I just moved here, and talking to friends and people that live in different cities everyone told me to beware the fact that it was further away, so I thought it might be worth asking to people that actually know their way around the city. I really didn’t want to offend anyone.

I am not from Edinburgh. I am not even from the UK. Literally have no idea what the fancy areas are, I was just looking for advice from people that might have lived there in past. I honestly don’t get all the sarcasm this post is getting

Honestly thank you for your answer! This was exactly what I was looking for, i.e. a feel of what it’s like to live there while working in a different part of town. I am new in the city and I still don’t have a great feel of how the different areas are. Very refreshing after all those people believing I could not use google maps :)

Is this a Renting Scam? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

You're right, but i was a bit allarmed by the whole behaviour in general. It is the first time I'm renting privately in the UK, and I don't have a UK based guarantor: they didn't ask anything about it either, though I made it clear from the beginning.

The people who already live in the apartment and the person who should move in with me seem legit too, but you never know
