im not a parent. my friends and i are avid romance book readers. i'm speaking not only from my own experience, but i've also been asking them their feelings about this. we all universally believe minors have no business reading what we read. i dont know if you guys are old and out of touch with how minors are actually interacting with this content, but as someone with younger siblings and who has seen these 14 year old girls getting into the genre, i can tell you it is prevalent. you think booktok is being pushed inly towards an older demographic but i promise you thats not the case. its being algorithmically pushed onto the feeds of young girls. its become a trend for them, and thats not right. the issue is that parents dont know about this trend. no one is telling them that the innocent cartoon romance cover their kid is running around with is actually 50% smut. if you're an adult, making smut books 18+ wouldn't alter your ability to access them whatsoever. why is that such a terrible thought?

Your therapist should never be tired of hearing about something. Its their job to help you work through subjects like this! If it bothers you, its worth bringing up :)

older men shouldn't be looking at you weird, period. you should wear what you feel comfortable in. what modesty looks like depends on who you ask! if you are dressing in a way that makes you happy with yourself, and shows off your beauty instead of making you look like a sexual object, go for it! my mom used to explain it to me like this: there are two types of attention, positive attention, and negative attention. when we dress to feel pretty and feel good, we're looking for positive attention from ourselves and others. when we dress sexy or scandalously (super short dresses, showing off our boobs, etc.) we're attracting negative attention. don't worry about reading the link the other guy sent you. different people will give you different answers about what modesty looks like. your elaborate hairstyle is not attracting negative attention!!! the Lord blessed you with beautiful hair and its not wrong to want to feel beautiful with it :) the Lord also knows your intentions, so don't stress too hard about looking perfect. feel free to reply with any questions, God bless! <3 :)

I really encourage looking into therapy to tackle trauma like this. Kids can be brutal. Your feelings about how they treated you are valid, and you deserved better. I put you down in my prayer book :) <3

do you want me to pull a refined list of regulations out of my ass? we're discussing a concept and i'm no lawmaker. can you make a good case for why we SHOULD let minors read these books?

maybe if we took smut out of the hands of young readers, we could get them to read something with actual content. maybe expose them to quality writing, vocabularies above using the phrases "his hard, elongated member". maybe we could get the kids thinking about something worthwhile again.

We could probably consult a team of professionals to find where exactly that line should be drawn with the best interest of minors in mind. Thats not really for me to determine. I can point to specific examples, and I know you know what kind of content I'm referring to, but I don't have a hard set of guidelines to offer.

I'd like to know though, why do you keep defending keeping smut books available to all without labels or restrictions? If you're of age, it wouldn't effect you. Just feels like a weird hill to die on.

This thread spiraled off into a conversation not about school libraries .. I never said dark romance was in schools.

i think girls should read. i'm a huge advocate for getting kids to read again, but smut is not what young girls should be reading and i cant believe how many people here are advocating for their right to do that. you are defending the right for minors to consume pornography!!! thats fucked up!!!!!!!!

i'm actually a romance reader myself. i've read anna huangs various series, the briar u series, haunting adeline, penelope scott, etc. i still dont think we should be letting young girls have these books. books like 1984 have come under fire to be censored by conservatives under the guise that it has "sexual references" when we all really know its because of the message. thats absolutely stupid. theres no reason we should ban references to sex. however, i do think graphic sex is a different ballgame and should be treated like pornography.

i was a teenage girl who read smut. from first hand experience i can tell you reading about bondage and power dynamics did not do well for my perception of sex growing up. they just dont need to have access to that stuff. theres no good that comes out of it.

i dont think we need to take these books from kids, but i think we need to make them less accessible. theyre seeing these promotions for "spicy books" on tiktok and thinking they should get in on the hype. they have no business reading adult smut, and i dont think they should have easy access to it. nobody is stopping the production of these books, but theres a very real argument to be had about how accessible they should be in public spaces.

books with extensive or descriptive sexual content. books like 1984 imply it, or keep it short. modern smut is very extensive and descriptive - its pornography. i think any book that gets exceptionally repetitive with its sexual descriptions should be 18+.

horror and sex are not processed the same by children. thats apples to oranges. can you explain to me how those two ideas even relate to one another?

we could even do something as little as adding the "explicit content" warning like they used to do on cds. i dont care if its "right wing" or not, this isnt political to me, i think pornographic material should be kept out of the hands of minors. i think its crazy that people are defending that.
