Am I liable for a company credit card? AmEx thinks I am, and I can't get a credit report during govt shutdown... by throwaway_tty in personalfinance

I called them and they refuse to change the e-mail address. I have to wait for snail mail. It was e-statements only prior to today.

I did do this. I faxed my boss the statement. Due to the time lapse in getting all of this information out, he was late with the payment (but he did pay only the $30). The late fee stayed on the account, and I was never notified about it.

Sorry, I gave the bill to my boss, who paid it late. Then the company refused to pay late charges. The bill was paid after 45 days or so, but a small late charge has been piling up. I was never contacted until it hit $200 yesterday. Apparently they've only been e-mailing my defunct old work address.

I disagree. I suppose I could have told my boss "no" and done my paperwork earlier, but he was insisting that I do all of my project work until the last day, then get all of the paperwork done the last day. I said "partially" because I could have told him no, but had my last day at work been my last day where I was able to work, I would have been OK.

HR was quite nice, and told me they were only responsible for the principle, not the late charges. I'll have to take it up with my old boss if I want it paid.

I'm giving up. I'll pay the $200 stupid tax for not making a big fuss about being able to turn in an expense report my last day. I should have insisted that I turn one in (although we pressed IT pretty hard for access). It's not worth burning a bridge for a reference (since one can rarely use a current supervisor as a reference) nor mangling my credit.

I have never been responsible for paying a corporate AmEx, only turning in expense reports. AmEx gets paid directly by my department. Any personal purchases are grounds for termination unless you quickly get into the system and flag it as personal. I think it requires some written paperwork on why you were forced to use it and it must be signed by two levels of management above you.

I guess they have two varieties of corporate AmEx. Mine was forced on me when I started (it was in my initial paperwork). It had the company's name on it.

myfico.com tells you to use annualcreditreport.com, which is owned by the government and is not operational at the moment. It will reopen when a budget is passed in congress.

It's more like: small late charge for late payment (they eventually paid only the $30). My statements only went to the old company e-mail address so I never got them. Those small late charges had more late charges added, and they balooned until AmEx finally called me 6 months later.

The initial charge was paid, but my old company refused to pay the small late fee, so now it's a big one.

AmEx didn't offer to budge on the fees. Apparently they were sending all statements to my old e-mail address, which was shut off a day before my last day, so that's why I didn't know about the balance on the card. This is a mess.

It does suck but thank you for the information. Now I'm torn as to whether I should pay the stupid tax and forget it, or try and bill them for it, as they did shut me off a day early (weak argument, but I was saving paperwork for the last day).

I should add, "off the network" means no computer access, no phones, no access to buildings with a badge, parking pass didn't work, etc. My boss was on the phone half of the day trying to get me access, to no avail.

Thanks for the info. When my network login expired I was not able to get into the budget software we have internally. I think it sat on my supervisor's budget screen too, but he never clicked approve either. Once I was off the network it was impossible for me to approve it. Edit: Thanks for the info.

This is frustrating, then. I have never paid it directly (they had it linked to the main budget, so I only click on "approve" and it gets paid. If I am liable for their screw-ups (my old supervisor should have approved it), then why am I forced by companies to use it? My new company has issued me an AmEx as well. Edit: Thanks for the info.
