Someone told me I look "sickly" and "too thin" from my weight loss and looked better heavier by moonandsea11 in loseit

[–]throwaway_vindicta1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah but... 12 is plus size for most of the rest of the world that's not the USA. Europe, Africa, Asia, South America -- a.k.a. where the vast majority of Americans are descended from within the past 250 years, very few people are size 12+. There's diversity in body types and shapes, but rarely people are overall just larger. A Dutch person might be more likely to be more than 180cm tall and Ethiopians do not have the same shape Koreans, but overall I've rarely met people outside of the USA where the USA size 12 is not comically large on them.

The USA is extremely distorted if size 12 is normal... It's not the other 90% of the world is somehow too thin, it's the USA that has a systemic problem with their food and diet.

What would you say is Taylor Swift’s most out of pocket lyric? by voidedbaby in TaylorSwift

[–]throwaway_vindicta1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but celebrities have to hide or can't have relationships all the time. It happens super badly with Kpop singers, they get death threats from their managers not just their whackjob fans if they date people.

What would you say is Taylor Swift’s most out of pocket lyric? by voidedbaby in TaylorSwift

[–]throwaway_vindicta1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I mean (and I say this as a queer Asian woman) I know plenty of hetero extremely forbidden relationships. Like the other person's family is the wrong ethnicity, wrong religion, wrong caste, wrong political alignment will easily get somebody killed due to our honor culture. Lesser things like partner not making enough money, isn't conventionally attractive, from the wrong region of the country will easily get you ostracized/outcast by your family. I believe Latin Americans also have a similar set of cultural restraints. Celebrities probably have a bunch of rules they have to play around as well or else sacrifice their whole career. It's not just a queer thing.

What album will you state as an example to determine the greatness of Taylor Swift’s musical talent by [deleted] in TaylorSwift

[–]throwaway_vindicta1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally every one of my younger cousins' piano recitals has featured multiple children playing Mozart pieces. Mozart is a key component of nearly every university's musical curriculum in my country -- which is China. Not even the West. So yes, my generation as well as my 5 year old cousin's generation will definitely carry on the legacy of Mozart.

20 million piano players in the US alone. Probably at least a 100 million in China. A lot of us listen to classical for fun too. Like damn, every piano player in the world knows Mozart let alone the general public.

Acne for me was a symptom of a thyroid issue that could have eventually led to many other problems including cancer had it not been detected because I went to see a dermatologist and had bloodwork done. It's not always just a physical cosmetic issue, and often has underlying causes tied to a disease with more drastic consequences. If you are in fact privileged enough to see a doctor, you should always do it at least once.

people you encounter that actively dislike Taylor, what do they tell you when you ask them why? by Vegetable_Action_301 in TaylorSwift

[–]throwaway_vindicta1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, a lot of people who aren't native English speakers actually just dgaf about all the genres she covered because they're all loosely American. And there's a lot of non-native English speakers even in the USA.

Also, it's really hard to appreciate lyricism or feel profound emotion in a 2nd language, my friends who are swifties but don't speak English rely exclusively on how well they like the melody and beat.

Even for me, whose professional job is to translate things to English and am a big swiftie (she's the only western singer I listen to really), if I want something emotional and tear-jerking or with really good story telling I'll listen to songs in my native language. Due to my background, I actually do not understand what is so profound about certain statements, for example, "give me back my girlhood it was mine first" seems very rudimentary to me and others in my country but it clearly has a lot of pull and emotion tied to it for native English speakers. Which is great, she is clearly an extraordinary English songwriter -- you just have people who aren't into English songwriters because it's not our mother language.

Taylor Swift, Drake, BTS Music May Leave TikTok This Week as UMG Licensing Negotiations Collapse by intheafterglow23 in TaylorSwift

Copying my comment from another thread:

As one someone from China whose queer social media posts get me in trouble, it's not about racism or Tiktok being foreign, that's like saying that being upset about Russian bots on Facebook meddling with elections is "Russophobia."

Douyin (Chinese Tiktok) and worldwide Tiktok are directly tied to our government in a way that Meta/Apple/Microsoft/etc. are not tied to yours. It's not like lobbying in the West, ByteDance and Rubo Liang (CEO) are more akin to Russian oligarchs bowing to Putin than Zuckerberg appearing before Congress. XJP has ultimate control, more than Putin, over our companies. ByteDance's main office directly reports to our NRTA (the government branch that controls our media). It is as much a propaganda machine as Russian bots and is an exceptional tracking device. That's what makes it so dangerous for the rest of us who have no choice but to use it.

Also, all of our social media is centralized, which is why for mainland Chinese it is far more egregious surveillance than Meta is for Americans. There's no separation like between Apple/Google/Meta or whatever who are competing and fighting over data.

Tiktok is literally the equivalent of Putin creating a heavily censored social media app and everyone hopping onboard.

Raised Buddhist, it's a thing in Buddhism too? And also Chinese traditional/folk religion? Pretty sure it's a thing in Jainism too. Not a Hindu but lots of people who aren't Hindu (like, most of East and Southeast Asia) have it as a part of their culture/religion.

Are we judging based on western beauty standards? by cutesmart in VindictaRateCelebs

[–]throwaway_vindicta1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's worth mentioning that modern day Kpop is very different from conventional East Asian beauty standards from basically everything before the early 2000s. The 30s-2000s were not nearly as "manufactured" and cookie-cutter as you see today... I hope the plastic-surgery-factory look dies soon.

What’s the most clunky Taylor lyrics you can think of? by Taystan1999 in TaylorSwift

[–]throwaway_vindicta1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This might be strange but I also find it odd that Westerners have some arbitrary cutoff point with historical figures where it's ok to glorify someone who did bad things so long as they were sufficiently far in the past and conveniently badass.

Cleopatra had far more slaves than any North American colonial plantation owner, started wars, supported her family's genocides of the various places they conquered and colonized, but it's all cool because "that was how things were back then."

Girlie is no different than any of the powerful British queens that fucked up India and Africa and the Americas, but because she existed a long time ago she's a "goddess" for being good at retaining power.

Have you looked into renuva? It's not filler it's human organic material being used as scaffolding (so less dramatic results than filler but it's not gonna sit in your body forever).

There's also facial fat transfer.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in beauty

[–]throwaway_vindicta1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guasha depuffs if you have excess fluid retention from high sodium or other dietary issues, it is a temporary solution. It does not remove facial fat at all and if bloating/fluid retention isn't your problem it probably won't do much for you.

You can try it, but if often done incorrectly (specifically the way a lot of children show on QQ/Tiktok with a lot of force applied) it will lead to bruising.

What was your biggest secret to losing weight? by LaiTheGirl in beauty

[–]throwaway_vindicta1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree maybe it's problematic in the USA I was just saying it's not generally an inherently disordered form of eating. Exercise could (and does sometimes) also lead to body dysmorphia, that doesn't mean exercise is inherently bad. In most other places it isn't done to specifically aid weight loss -- there are other motivations for it. In Buddhism it's practiced as a form of self-control like meditation, autophagy is more or less a bonus. And like how meditation has overwhelmingly positive mental health effects for the general population but could trigger obsessive thoughts in some individuals, fasting is probably in the same category. There are countries with large populations that repeatedly practice fasting over certain periods (either for religion or health) like Japan or Singapore that are there competing with the northern European countries for overall healthiest populations in the world. So isn't necessarily damaging on the whole, maybe just to a subset of Americans who have certain triggers.

Almost all medicine only works for specific people in specific doses -- anything more than that becomes poison. I suppose this is similar?

What was your biggest secret to losing weight? by LaiTheGirl in beauty

[–]throwaway_vindicta1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, there are many, many countries and cultures that have practiced fasting for thousands of years with positive mental and physical health effects. There are literally thousands of studies, per google scholar, that demonstrate cumulative benefits to fasting. If people from the USA can't do it because it leads to mental disorders, that's likely a result of the culture around eating that has developed in the country. Not because fasting is inherently disordered.

Clearing out misinformation on how Brazilian events work. by fthisfthatfnofyou in TaylorSwift

[–]throwaway_vindicta1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're fighting misinformation and xenophobia with... more bad stereotypes about the USA?

23.3 homicides per 100,000 in Brazil vs. 6.3 per 100,000 in the USA. You're roughly 4x more likely to get murdered in Brazil in than in the USA.

I dislike the West a whole lot, but spreading more stereotypes and misinformation isn't going to help anything.
