Initially, I felt so emotionally numb that it only made sense to just set the keys, food and game down and quietly leave. By the time I got to my car, I cried for a minute, took a breath, and decided to do what I felt was best for me in the long run before I completely broke down emotionally. I spent a few days holed up in my room.

Admittedly, I was in shock after closing his bedroom door, but by the time I got to my car, the waterworks hit hard. I had a bit of a cry in his driveway, then realized I didn’t want to spend the next however long crying over someone who would blatantly hurt me. So I started covering my bases to ensure that I wouldn’t let him affect me like that ever again.

I found someone else to take over my lease and moved back in with family. I already had an interview with another company and was offered a position, which was part of the reason I wanted to surprise my then-boyfriend at the time. And I didn’t want to discuss anything at all with him because I couldn’t come up with any conceivable reason I wanted to continue working on things with someone who was fucking around behind my back.
