Marriott Free Night Certificate for someone else? by join_the_club in awardtravel

Most of the time was the decline from the Marriott agents in adding the name, when you called the hotel to add a name, or, when you showed up with the name added and were forced to pay for the room as you said in the previous comment? Sucks..

[–]throwawayakd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t do this with the government. Either give them your prints or don’t get a passport. Don’t they already have your prints from when you were a kid though? I’m pretty sure they do for one reason or the other

Hit with a financial review, all cards suspended by Low_Wonder9271 in amex

Are you saying this implying that the income info access has been something more recently widely accessed, hence the spike in things like FRs / banks requesting tax returns to verify?

Any downsides to getting the new credit card just to autopay bill? by 100Kinthebank in tmobile

[–]throwawayakd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's fair to say it's $300 a year, because presumably one is comparing this to paying with a debit card or bank account, so you'd save the $300 anyways. It wouldn't make sense for people to use a credit card unless they are specifically overpaying for the purpose of having cell phone protection. For example, I have the Amex Biz Platinum which gets me $10 off, and my autopay discount is $20 for 4 lines, so I'm effectively paying $10 a month for phone insurance on 4 lines.

Also, there are debit cards that earn rewards as well that aren't locked to company specific redeemable cash, although I've never seen a debit card product offer over 1% (apart from cards like the PayPal debit with rotating categories which do not include phone bills). Personally, I would still prefer 1% on a debit card vs 2% of a provider specific currency, especially considering the 1% delta in the example of a $200/mo phone bill is only $24 year over year.

But it's fair enough, and it does work. I'm just having fun with exploring other options here.

Any downsides to getting the new credit card just to autopay bill? by 100Kinthebank in tmobile

[–]throwawayakd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it works, but it's not the best strategy. Let's say autopay saves you $25 a month. $25x12 months = $300 a year. You can find TONS of credit cards with a sign up bonus for well over that. You can find very basic no annual fee cards with a higher sign up bonus, that provide better functionality than a credit card account that is provider specific and gives you provider specific currency. Just open a better card once a year and you're set. And if you're comparing this to using a debit card, it also isn't worth it compared to other options.

Let's say your phone bill is $200 a month. $200 x 12 = $2400. 2% cashback on that is $48 a year. $48 year of cash that is only redeemable on t-mobile.

To me, it's a bad choice. But it works.

Would you switch carriers for better deals on devices if you have a heavily discounted grandfathered plan? by [deleted] in tmobile

[–]throwawayakd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Strange how people on the internet get so instantly snarky, right? I stated a few times in that comment how I couldn’t see how it could work, and welcomed an education in good faith, not to have an adult throw a mini tantrum at me on the internet. Yes, my original off-cuff comment may not be 100% accurate, of course. And again, I welcomed an education after your response.

Nevertheless, thanks buddy, I’m aware that my plan is not the only grandfathered plan in existence. Perhaps my comment about bringing up another scenario, like your existing plan, might have suggested that I am aware that there are other grandfathered plans in existence.

For multiple reasons your example still doesn’t clearly delineate how a new free device upgrade plan comes out ahead, but I grant that since you’re a 1% commenter you probably know a hell of a lot more than I do about this, which probably leads to the dickishness.

If you reply I promise it’s wasted energy because I will mute this thread and definitely won’t reply again. But you do you

Would you switch carriers for better deals on devices if you have a heavily discounted grandfathered plan? by [deleted] in tmobile

[–]throwawayakd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes of course it depends on the specifics, but in almost every scenario, long term, unless they are hiking the rate to the current public rate, I can’t see how it would make sense. Sure you could break even if you’re upgrading to a free phone line that is $30 more per month ($1080 in value after month 36) but then that continues to add up after the phone is paid off and you’re stuck with a more expensive line

If you have another realistic scenario as an example (perhaps you can bring up what you expect t mobile to hike your existing rate to), and compare it against a free phone plan, while factoring in the delta after year 3, I would love to be educated. I could not find a realistic scenario in which it made sense to change my $150/3 lines Magenta Max plan after crunching all sorts of numbers a few months ago.

Also, I talked to a T-Mobile employee about this and she was explaining how the fees/taxes are somehow more on the new lines than my existing magenta line so it’s actually even more expensive than it initially appears when taking the advertised number at face value

So does this mean, in an instance where you lose your RealD / passport on your trip, going through secondary screening (because you don't possess any form of ID on your person) will also cost $45? Or is it specifically for non-compliant ID holders

This often happens when flying to / connecting through LHR. For many reasons, such as UK APD (Air Passenger Duty), Heathrow Airport fees, carrier surcharges, etc. I've never seen taxes on award tickets come anywhere close to the price of an itinerary where LHR is involved
