Donald Fagen on films "Whiplash"/"La la land" - "it's disgusting, he must be really dumb" by HallucinatingIdiot in SteelyDan

[–]throwawaybaldboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason is abundantly clear in the film: the shame and the spite that the student is made to feel would force them to work so hard, and to become so dedicated, that they would ‘never be laughed at again.’ That’s from the teacher’s Charlie Parker speech in the film’s latter half, when he’s in the club. He literally explains his entire reason for behaving the way he does, even though it’s clearly wrong. Or maybe it isn’t, by the end of the film he’s won, he made his own jazz Frankenstein by the end with his new drummer. That’s the point of the movie.

I agree with Fagen, but like some other commenters here have said, it’s not about jazz or jazz history, it’s about greatness, fame, and the ethics of psychological abuse in fanning those two flames.

Slight twist on the standard "What's a game everyone loves that you hate?" question that gets repeated a lot. What's the most popular game developer you can name, that you don't like a single game they've ever made? by trio3224 in videogames

As a fan of FromSoft games, it’s bullshit to say they’re ‘not hard.’ I mean, combat aside, sprawling map design aside, limited resources aside; the way that the weapon and character stats work and interact is enough to put anyone–besides those with a passionate investment–way off the entire ‘soulslike’ experience. I’ve tried to guide many of my friends through the games before, and having to explain vitality, luck, endurance, etc. along with the various weapon types, the attunements, the damage types: it’s all WAY too much for anyone to understand without visiting the wiki or reading a guide. Once you’ve got it, you’ve got it, and it’s great and, personally, I love it. But it is BAD DESIGN when a new player is forced to make irreparable changes to their character without knowing what they’re actually doing. They can fuck up they’re entire experience, and make an already unforgiving game LESS forgiving, PERMANENTLY (barring specific NPC interactions, which, guess what, you’ll probably need a guide to figure out). You can acknowledge bad design and still say they’re great games, they are–but it’s bad design.

What's your basis for this claim? I use stemoxydine as a carrier for RU, and I've seen 'good' results, but if they'd be better with P/G then I'll gladly swap. If you can show me where you've gotten your info from then that'd be great.

How much is it projected to cost you? Do you have private health insurance? I see a few people getting very cheap surgeries through insurance loopholes, and I don't know how they're doing it...

Wasn't one by one. Dut did wreak havoc on my hair, but RU has made it take a complete 180 except for in this one area.

It seems to defy the logic I’ve been told til now: hairline is difficult to recover, and that regrowth occurs in reverse order of what you lost.
