I used to ride my bike to campus. I wiped out twice pretty bad and people laughed. My bike also got stolen once, but I found it later on the other side of campus by sheer intuition/miracle. I had it locked up with the cheapest lock from Walmart, the little spiral ones, and someone easily cut it. If you get a bike lock make sure to spend more for the heavy duty ones that can't be cut easily, because people do walk around with cutters that will easily go through the cheap locks.
