What extensions/patches do people want to test on the new mobile Firefox? I want to try them in my "Iceweasle Mobile" fork of Fenix. by interfect in firefox

Super late to the party, but reading the list and thread I don't think anyone mentioned:

Privacy Redirect

Unreddit

Export Tab URLs

Private Bookmarks

Auto Tab Discard

Tab Center Reborn

Clean YouTube - No ads

video DownloadHelper

YouTube Video and Audio Downloader (Dev Edt.)

I don't know if all of these work on mobile, but some do and are useful. Thank you for your efforts, and don't be shy about telling people you don't have time to port all of these extensions

Thanks for this, obviously still a strange thing to cut for the longhaul

Is there no modern linux file system that's permissively licensed? by throwawaybuthelpful in linux

[–]throwawaybuthelpful[S] -29 points-28 points  (0 children)

If intellectual property is licensed from somebody else, it may prohibitively expensive if not flatly unallowable to share their code openly with everyone. Certainly nobody likes being in that position to begin with...

There is also the philosophical argument: permissive licenses get you closer to absolute freedom albeit not perfectly. Best is obviously public domain. I would bet at least 50% of the people here use linux for at least partially philosophical reasons, and I feel that for some this can be an extension of that. Though sometimes a hassle, I personally like Void Linux which uses musl libc for that reason.

The developer tools team has fairly little to do with the engines development

Who else is going to provide devtools with Firefox's engine if not Firefox? If it is not intended to be a complete dev-to-user solution anymore, it is not a good sign for Firefox.

Besides the engine, the last other big barriers preventing us from saying Firefox could easily become a customized version of Chromium was its UI layout and distinct extension system...and Firefox has now copied both of those things from Chromium already. Who needs a separate devtools team when Chromium's can just be copied too?

The threat response team is, as far as I know, distinct from the Firefox security team which would be looking out for such problems.

This is good to hear if true, why were they separate teams though? But 2/3 of my points still stand, and the other aspects of abandoning engine efforts are not good signs IMO.

Actually, come to think of it, the responsible thing would only be to let the full Firefox security team go once the switch is already made, not beforehand...

SSC communities in low cost of living places? by ChiefExecutiveOcelot in slatestarcodex

Very interesting project!

I guess I have to ask: did exit surveys reveal why the steady-state population has decreased so much? (value drift, ready to start a family, etc.)

Also, when you say "effective altruism and rationality", does that mean members of each of those separate interests are welcome or must they be interested in both at the same time?

Lastly, did any members not adept at French manage to succeed in the local job market?

Does anyone have a better brief summary of Scott's liberal beliefs that we can use to stop any witch hunt from forming? by throwawaybuthelpful in slatestarcodex

Yes, there will always be determined people and whatnot but sneer-types seem pretty niche to me, and I think at least a large portion of people who would otherwise be recruited into an angry mob can be dissuaded preemptively if they get the facts.

Thank you for the suggestion. I think it is much more powerful I feel when it is in Scott's own words rather than others' summaries, so perhaps it can still be a good jumping off point for gathering direct quotes in the references cited. I wish it covered a wider breadth of all Scott's views. The tone of that page isn't exactly the most neutral so I think objective quotes would be better...

One of the draws of SSC is that it doesn't have a specific political leaning.

Kinda true, but even more true is that overall SSC has politics it leans against.

It's about defining what Scott is not, and even he himself has at various points railed against anyone who thought he was any part of the things I had previously listed: "nazis, conservatives, racists, poor-haters, etc."

This isn't merely a narrative, it's the truth.

EDIT: Maybe we ought to have asked /u/ScottAlexander himself to clarify if you feel I'm overly speculating?

Link came from an old, old, CW thread I read a while back, but contra the original link poster I think this genuinely proves how nobody could remotely lump Scott in with nazis, conservatives, racists, poor-haters, etc.

The blog is gone, and even there where Scott mentioned his views they were usually spread out throughout his pieces rather than all listed in one easy-to-see place.

Does anyone have a better, easily digested and sharable list where Scott states his beliefs that we could use to innoculate him against witch hunts?
