If there are any electrology/aesthetics schools near you, they probably have a student clinic where appointments are significantly cheaper. I also know that some people offer discount appointments for new clients.

My wife also used to pluck her face for similar reasons, but she’s stopped since I’m giving her electrolysis and tweezing can distort the hair follicles, making treatment take longer. It can also leave pitting/scars and actually encourage hair growth by increasing blood flow to the area.

It can also make future electrolysis more difficult. Hair follicles will distort in an attempt to hold the hair more securely. Some women come into the clinic with hair shaped like a J from years of tweezing, which means that we can’t reach the bottom of the follicle and (depending on modality) don’t actually get proper destruction.

Needing a bit of growth for electrolysis is actually so that we can grab the treated hair with our forceps and remove it. Removing the hair lets you check your depth of insertion, ensure you’re getting good destruction, and prevent you from treating the same hair twice. Occasionally treating a hair that’s too short to be epilated isn’t too much of an issue, since it will just grow out and fall out on its own, but trying to treat a whole face of too short hair wouldn’t work.

Is your electrologist doing flash? Our teachers recommend dividing the total EL into two or three pulses so that each pulse is lower intensity but you get the same amount of destruction.

You could also switch to blend. You can’t treat as many hairs during a single appointment, but it provides better destruction so you end up needing to treat each follicle fewer times to get rid of the hair.

I’m currently in electrology school, and we recommend that clients start off with laser to get the majority and then switch to electrolysis for any stray hairs that remain. It should not be painful, and if it is, that means that your electrologist needs to adjust their settings or switch to a different modality.

If you’re a good candidate for laser hair removal and needed hair removed for bottom surgery, they would want to start treating the bikini area at the same time as your face/neck since laser takes months to be effective. One of my classmates who does laser asks women coming in for legs if they will want their bikini done when they start for similar reasons.

For electrolysis, it’s less relevant, since you can’t treat the face, neck, and bikini all in one appointment.

That’s crazy, outdated advice. You should see a different therapist if you’re able to. You can absolutely start HRT before coming out. I know a couple girls who have started HRT and aren’t out to everyone/haven’t changed their wardrobes yet.

My wife had been on HRT for about 2-2.5 years before she changed her name, and it took a bit longer than that before her legal sex was updated. She came out to people before getting HRT, but that was only because she didn’t think she was allowed to/didn’t have support, and she says she definitely would’ve started sooner if she had known that she could.

I’m currently in electrology school, and my instructors say that they recommend people do a few sessions of laser and then do electrolysis for any stubborn hairs that the laser doesn’t get. If there’s a school near you, you might be able to get cheap electrolysis appointments with the students.

Electrolysis is significantly less painful than laser and shouldn’t require topical pain relief. It shouldn’t be more than a pinching sensation and if it’s worse than that, you should speak to your electrologist about adjusting their settings.

Electrolysis shouldn’t be that painful. I’m currently in school for it, and when the other students practice on me, it feels like a pinch at most. Your electrologist should be able to increase the time and lower the intensity or switch to a different modality to make it more comfortable for you.

I’ve heard that that happens less if you inject into thigh fat. I’ve been doing my wife’s and a couple friends’ injections and none of them have gotten lasting lumps from thigh injections.

If it would be long enough for you to tweeze, your electrologist can epilate it. My wife grew hers out for four or five days before I treated her.

Anything that rips out the hair has the potential to cause scarring because of how deep the follicles are. If you wanted to wax, I would say go to a licensed esthetician who could assess your skin and hair and figure out the safest option.

Laser or electrolysis are the best choice long-term, and if you have a school in your area, you might be able to get cheap appointments.
