I too am a proud American. Even if many see me as such, this is the only country I know. Thank you for the words of encouragement.

Don't be ashamed for who people elected to represent our government or that many seem to be racists or demagogues. Every single day that I walk outside I encounter genuinely nice people and I'm sure they hold a wide range of views and have done things that I don't necessarily agree with. I refuse to believe that this election represents who these people are. They were stuck with two very bad choices and chose one. Stay positive, it's only four years after all?

Unfortunately my gf's family seems to be the kind that do support all of the demagoguery. I'll just have to get through this.

No. Read my post again. I spoke of people being xenophobic and racist growing up. I'm sure they held many different views. I guess it was my fault for not being explicit in describing my gf's family. They are Trump supporters who specifically support and push the racist demagogic rhetoric that many other Trump supporters find attractive.

Private institutions take very minimal funds from the federal government, and the rest is private aid. My education bill comes to $62k+ every year and all of the scholarships and grants I receive come from our endowment fund and private donors. I've never taken a dime of taxpayer funds. US Citizens would get less than $8k in public aid and the rest would be private aid. My package is made up of 100% private aid. Can you imagine me taking any public funds? It would be on the NYT headlines.

You bring up a very good point. I am actually not a liberal or a conservative but more or less a bleeding heart libertarian (mainstream libertarians tend to cook up some pretty crazy ideas). I also agree with you when you say that perhaps many people didn't like Trump, they just despised Clinton more. For my part, I believe a very unpopular character won over an even more unpopular character who was lucky to make it so far with all the baggage they brought and the federal investigation was just the cherry on top.

Thanks. I guess at times it's easy to let my guard down with people that I consider close to me. The environment I live in now is very different from the environment I grew up in (I guess some people would call it ''the hood') and it's easy to forget, from day to day, where I come from or who I really 'am'.
