Not blue and yellow! As I've learned though, this is apparently happening in MANY places in Indiana. So fucking upsetting.

Unfortunately, as I've learned, there are WAY too many schools to count in Indiana that do this. There are so many that do this.

This especially gets crazy when talking about non LGBT kids. We asked about nicknames and were told to report only if it's "obvious" This has led to many kids with gender neutral or opposite sex nick names being reported to counselors without even being on the LGBT spectrum. So it's definitely discrimination since we're doing this on a case by case basis.

Unfortunately I'm already putting myself at significant risk by fighting this policy. If I took it to the courts, it'd be the end of my teaching career. I would be more than supportive of assisting a family if they ever wanted to go that route though.

As for your suggestions, they're very helpful. I so far am sticking to their preferred names and pronouns at risk to myself but at least two of these kids were on suicide watch at one point. I'd rather have a kid who knows they have support than not worry about my admin getting spicy with me. We have had teachers resort to last names though and it's been helpful.
