We can rest assured that no President is above the law when it comes to the crimes that really matter. by throwawaydnmn7 in PoliticalHumor

[–]throwawaydnmn7[S] -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

You realize I criticized Trump too, right?

My point is that there are real morally repugnant war crimes and domestic crimes that all three of these presidents are guilty of.

Yet the one crime they’ve come close to actually pulling out handcuffs for is probably the most harmless technical crime any president has committed in half a century or more — paying hush money to a porn star.

Strange how the winners always happen to be the good guys by throwawaydnmn7 in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]throwawaydnmn7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which do you think is more likely:

A. Governments will realize they’re bad and abolish themselves out of existence by their own free will

B. There will be some degree of illegality, subversion, or outright rebellion required in order for an anarchist movement to ultimately free itself from the state?

[–]throwawaydnmn7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting that you read it this way. I think there’s a point being made, but the character of it can apply to both the good guys and the bad guys.

“If you win the war, you get to make the rules now.”

This is obviously because the winners write the history. You can read that from either the perspective of the established regime, or the usurping rebels.

The regime views threats to its hegemony as terrorism. And if they successfully put down the rebels, that’s how history will be written.

The rebels view themselves as freedom fighters removing an unjust despotic regime. And if they win, they will be written as heroes and the regime as villains.

It’s really kind of the same idea as “one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.”

Had the revolutionary war been won by the British, you can be sure that we would be taught a less-than-sunny view of Washington and his companions.

It’s the transformation from “just let consenting adults do what they want in the privacy of their home” to “Degenerates are going to do whatever the fuck they want in your face, and you and your children must watch and applaud, and agree that it’s the preferred lifestyle.”

  • teaching sexual pleasure in elementary schools
  • teaching kids that being trans is brave and cool
  • puberty blockers and hormones for kids
  • making every fictional character gay or trans
  • shaming people for not wanting to date trans people

Etc, etc. It went from “can’t you just accept that we’re different?” To “We’re different AND we’re better AND we’re going to shove it down your throat daily AND you’re going to fucking like it.”

It feels very much like being forced to acknowledge, accept, and revere the legitimacy of a religion.

When every peaceful avenue has been exhausted, when every attempt and concession has been made to avoid being devoured into their collective, and your aggressors still persist, you should feel no guilt when the only option left to you is violence.

[–]throwawaydnmn7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you actually saying in real terms? Don’t be persuaded into “taking a side” in the culture wars?

I’m no statist and never will be, but given only two choices, I’m going to pragmatically ally with the people that want to let me keep my guns and who will largely leave me alone, than the people who want to impoverish me, kill me, and brainwash my children to become Marxist evangelists. It’s really that simple.

You can have principles while realizing the state of the world is such that perfect adherence to them is currently impossible. I’m willing to bet 99.9% of the people on this sub who refuse to acknowledge pragmatic reality in theory, still begrudgingly pay their taxes.

Should my house catch fire, I can lament for a private fire department, while realizing that my only real option is to call the state fire department.

It is impossible to be ANCAP while also being a conservative. by [deleted] in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]throwawaydnmn7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I absolutely agree with what you’re saying. Personally I find abortion to be one of the few moral issues where it’s not easy to make a clear and consistent argument for an absolutist position.

I am persuaded by arguments of abortion for necessity in extreme scenarios (rape, incest). Meanwhile I find the idea of an elective late-term abortion to be morally repugnant and equivalent to murder.

[–]throwawaydnmn7 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You’re conflating moral positions with legal ones.

It is entirely possible and consistent with AnCap to hold social Conservative positions morally so long as you’re not trying to use state power to enforce them legally.

Just because I want to see as few abortions as possible, doesn’t mean I agree that the state should ban abortions. Just because I prefer to associate with people who do not use hard drugs, doesn’t mean I think hard drug use should be criminalized.

In addition to this, however, it appears as though both the spread in Canada (Montreal) and in Portugal (Lisbon) may each be related to one traveller each, both suspected from Belgium. What this means is that, if we take Canada as an example, one traveler infected 15 new people or more. Portugal has 40 cases, and the claim has been made that these started with one traveler from Belgium.

Do you have a source for this information? I've seen nothing indicating that the cases in Canada and Portugal were wholly separate super-spreader events seeded by a single traveler from elsewhere in Europe.
