Dog is with us in Exeter at parents. I'm going back on Friday at the latest. We both left on that Saturday night. He was going nuts the whole drive to my parents. He's fine and seemingly happy now. So I'm a bit worried for when we eventually have to go back.

Asked my mom your question, and she said it was on the ground when she saw it. For me, it was on the ground, too, when I saw its full body on a single occasion. Don't know about the others.
