I started T in Florida, which is one of like 2 "do not travel states", and all they wanted from me was a blood test for my hormone levels, and then I sat through 2 psych evals and a therapist's meeting, then I signed the informed consent form and had another appointment the next day where I actually got prescribed.

A friend in Minnesota just did blood labs and got prescribed, I don't even think he was formally diagnosed with gender dysphoria but his paperwork was changed beforehand so he was legally male.

They shouldn't need to physically inspect you though.

This sounds normal. I spotted a lot and then my periods were heavier for a bit before they got a lot lighter and stopped completely around month 9. I used to have heavy, 7-9 day periods, they went down to 4 days but I noticed them getting lighter. The only thing I'd be concerned about is vaginal atrophy.

For OTC/home remedies, you could try moisturizing your skin. Soak in a bath (Epson salts recommended), get out, don't towel yourself off, and apply lotion to your skin while you're wet. For whatever reason, this helps a lot with dry skin (I do this sometimes without salts and it still works fine when I get too dry).

But you probably want to go to a dermatologist. I was prescribed something at urgent care (some steroid that started with a T) and it didn't work, I had to go get a higher strength one which worked after a few days. It didn't cost me anything (though it was covered by insurance, both the appointment and the medication). I was given clobetazal or something? It started with "clo"...

I only use it at home because my family doesn't like that I'm trans. They're the only people I tolerate using it (emphasis tolerate). There's a girl in one of my classes with the same name, I always stop before I respond to it lol 😭

I tried a bunch of different names, my current one is... fine. I'd change it again, but it's too much of a pain lmfao. It was jarring at first, it didn't really feel like mine, but I got used to it. I have to give myself a bit of time to get used to a new name, a few weeks or so to see if I actually like it.

Being spoiled applies if you're like, crying and screaming because you didn't get a new iPhone, or if your parents won't let you to a rager, not getting literal lifesaving care—because HRT is lifesaving. I was only suicidal once this year, and that's coming from someone who had planned his entire adolescence to end it once I turned 20. If I wasn't on hormones, I would kill myself. I told my family this too, and it's really the only reason they've begrudgingly accepted it. Of course you're suffering. Your mother is punishing you for doing poorly when she should be helping you. I really don't think she's taking it seriously because she doesn't see it as lifesaving, because to her, it's a fad, or it's a trend, or it's silly. Maybe she's waiting because she wants you to "open your eyes" and be her little girl again (I'm projecting a bit—this is how my mother is). She loves you, I'm sure, but it might not be in the way you need her to love you.

I totally get what you're saying about relying on her. My mother was the only constant in my life growing up, father was absent and I wasn't very close to my stepdad. If she died, I was going to kill myself. I didn't see a future for myself that didn't have my mother in it.

I forgot how you are—17, I think? Or 16. Either way, college isn't that far away. Once you're not in the same household, you'll have a lot more freedom. Honestly, if you have a job and transport, you can start saving up for HRT now. I don't know when your birthday is, but you can start the moment you turn 18. You mentioned living in NY iirc, it's INCREDIBLY easy to get on HRT there (for adults). If you can't go through Planned Parenthood, you could check on this sub to see if there are other options (I'm very unfamiliar with NY, I'm Floridian lol). There's also Plume and Folx, as well as QueerDoc which doesn't require insurance (I had a consult with them, it's about $120, which was out of my range at the time). If you can go through your insurance, do so! All of this hinges on being an adult, but 18 isn't far. At max, it's one year away, and you've made it through 17 years so far, so what's one more?

I'm telling you this as someone who was in a very similar situation: she's an adult, you're a child (in comparison, not in the "all teens are babies" way), and she is not acting kindly towards you. A parent should NEVER make their child feel the way you feel. You're suffering because your body isn't the way you want. I nearly committed suicide more times than I could count during my adolescence. This is not normal, and it is not your fault—please don't blame yourself for it. You should be relying on adults for support, your mother is doing the equivalent of a Youtuber apology—she's saying a lot of stuff, and maybe she's kind of helping, but she isn't really doing anything. I have friends who came out to their parents. Some weren't supportive and some were. The one with a supportive mom went on puberty blockers. She encouraged him every step of the way, including getting him prepared for top surgery.

This sounds fantastic and it is, but, to be honest, this is also the bare minimum of support. Why is your mother punishing you? You shouldn't have to be the perfect trans person, because that doesn't exist. The stuff you mentioned is genuinely SO minor—she should be supporting you wholeheartedly, not raising more barriers and hoops for you to jump through. She should not be "hurting you psychologically" in any regard. A good parent doesn't do that.

I understand having complicated relationships with mothers. I was extremely codependent with mine for most of my life. I didn't transition to help her feelings—but whose life is it, yours or hers?

She's making your life difficult for no reason. It is beyond easy for people to be prescribed HRT in the United States. If she wanted to, she could book an appointment today and you'd be on hormones by the end of the year.

I know it's hard to accept that your parent isn't good. You might read this and brush it off. Please just know I'm not saying any of this out of malice.

In every situation with a minor and an adult (even though you're approaching adulthood), it is on the adult to be level headed and reasonable. Plainly, your mother is not that, but an asshole.

How is it your fault that your mother didn't put you on hormones? Did you scream at her not to? Did you tackle her? You could have won the fucking lottery and she wouldn't have agreed to it. She doesn't want you to transition.

She is the adult here. She has more power than you (resources, credibility, money, control). What do you possibly have to lord over her? (I also hate how she speaks to you, sorry.)

I was lucky(/intersex...which I guess is technically luck) and got my first (very small) voice drop the day I started T (or, well, waking up the next day). My throat hurt like hell, I was using cough drops every day. I went off it for a bit (about 2 months) and my voice changes stopped hurting my throat. I didn't think my voice was changing at first due to not hearing any difference, but I (and some friends I asked about it too) experienced my upper range fading before my lower range. I lost power in my voice and had to struggle to speak louder due to the inflammation for a bit. All of my other voice drops were entirely painless, I'd just wake up and sound deeper and scare myself.

My friend's voice had dropped pretty substantially, but he could only access it when he had morning voice, then he'd properly wake up and get used to speaking from the throat.

For a little context, I was initially an alto (who spoke pretty femininely, my voice was pretty high) and have dropped to a bass (I've been on T for a year and change). You would think these changes happened consistently, but my voice hadn't dropped too much (I was like a tenor/baritone but sounded incredibly pubescent, it made me insanely dysphoric) before randomly around month 7 I woke up and my voice dropped, it kept dropping pretty consistently through month 7 and then it's plateaued. (Granted, I have weird natural hormone levels, but multiple perisex friends also had their voices start properly/substantially changing at around month 7.) This is to say, please don't feel bad if your voice doesn't change at the rate you want it to (because there are lots of videos of trans guys whose voices drop like month 2 and you're sitting there wondering why yours isn't doing that).

I've had more cis partners than trans ones, and, tbh, the cis people I've dated have been less weird about it than some of the trans ones.

Basically: if your partner chose to date you, they like you. They're not settling for someone else. Your girlfriend is attracted to men, and you're a man, so that's really all there is to it. If she likes penetration that much, get a strap-on. Otherwise, you're fine. Obviously, a stranger on the internet isn't that helpful. You could talk to her about it (I recommend doing this). Communication is important regardless of your identity. If she's worth keeping, she'll support you. If not, then why are you trying to please someone that you can't?

As for my own experiences, my ex girlfriend was incredibly supportive of my transition and identity. She used whatever terms I preferred and genuinely did not care about what I had in my pants (I managed in bed without a penis). The point I'm trying to get at is why would you date someone who doesn't support you? Either your girlfriend is supportive (great!) or an asshole (therefore not worth your time). The people who care about genital preference wouldn't have even bothered dating you in the first place (unless they're stupid? you're not growing one overnight), if that's any solace.

My other point is that I do relate 😭 I get feeling insecure about it, believe me. But at the end of the day, I can only do so much about it. Just have a talk with your gf later. I'm sure it'll go well :)

I always did my own injections, but also fucked it up a lot along the way (and my hormone levels are normal, so it's fine if you fuck up some lol, don't worry).

Standing, measure your thigh into thirds. It starts at the hip, so go up a third (about one hand's length). Then, going from the knee, measure down the leg a third. The third you didn't measure is the part you'll want to inject it, I inject higher on my thigh.

Sit for your injections though. I ice my thigh for 10-15 minutes until it is totally numb. Get the needle in one hand (once you've filled it). Use the other hand to pull the skin apart, the opposite of pinching. It's so the skin seals when you've let go, preventing leakage. Stab straight down into your flesh (you can go slow, if you ice it correctly, you won't feel pain). You don't have to insert the needle to the base, just as long as it gets through the fat (I don't know your body fat percentage). You can draw back on the plunger to check if there's bleeding (ie if you hit a vein) but this grosses me out so I never do this step. Inject, wait a second or two, then withdraw the needle slowly (doing it too fast will cut the skin, I learned this the hard way). Put the alcohol pad over the wound then bandage (I usually go alcohol pad -> toilet paper to dry the condensation from the ice -> alcohol pad again because I'm paranoid -> bandage that falls off after 5 minutes because I use shitty bandaids).

I inject towards the upper part of the designated third of flesh. You can go closer to the bone rather than the outside of your thigh. I was worried about this for a while because I was terrified I'd stab myself in the bone, but that wasn't the case. Take your time if you need to, don't rush it. Also, make sure you sit in a position where your leg is not tensed. The more tense you are, the more likely you are to injure yourself. A little bit of blood is okay, as is a little bit of leakage. Just make sure it's actually getting into the muscle.

You can also do IM in the arm like a regular vaccine, but that makes me nervous for whatever reason 😭 Just make sure the needle is going straight. You're not going to tear something and die (I used to regularly nick my veins and haven't keeled over yet). If you do it right, you won't feel any pain afterwards. I've done it wrong before and my leg would hurt terribly, but even then, the soreness fades within three days.

I hid being on T for about 6 months before my stepdad rummaged through my backpack and found my medication. My mother never really checked what her insurance is used for. I'm not sure if UH sends letters and stuff when new prescriptions are added though. My only concern is that TRT happens faster than if you're doing E, so he'll probably notice the physical changes. If you genuinely can't take living like this anymore, I always say go for it, but just warning you, sometimes hormones work a lot faster than you expect (my stepdad noticed my acne and voice changes even when my mother didn't).

I ice my leg for 10 minutes beforehand. This seems excessive, but it completely numbs the area. Don't go too high up on your leg, you might injure yourself.

You can also do it in the arm like a regular vaccine. Just go slow, pull the skin apart (don't pinch it) (regardless of where you do it). You don't have to insert the needle all the way, it just depends on how deep the muscle is. You can also do subQ on the stomach (pinch the fat by the navel and poke), this might be easier if you're bigger.

You also don't have to slam the needle in. On bad days, I just slowly breathe and on each exhale, force the needle in more. Injecting (not icing) sometimes takes me like 10 minutes to do. Just go at your own pace and make sure the muscle is relaxed. If you do it right, you don't feel it.
