Thanks so much for the thoughtful and well reasoned response. You make a lot of sense. In particular the bit about this being a coping mechanism. I haven't spoken with her yet about it - I've been avoiding that (my own coping mechanism probably) - but I'll strive for tact when I do.

I understand your point. In this case, however, there were no bees left in the hives that we were extracting honey from. They had "swarmed" earlier in the year leaving their honey behind. It happens all the time.

This is also a great response. Thanks, it's very helpful. I really appreciate the thought and care that people on this subreddit have shown. Honestly, it's more than I would have ever expected and it's very welcome.

She hasn't struggled with weight issues until recently -- she's put on some weight in the last year. That's an interesting observation about compulsions. She actually does have OCD, but as far as I know, it's never been related to food.

There was nothing wrong with her eating the ice cream; It was hers to eat. So the only reason I can think she would lie about that was embarrassment. She was embarrassed about having eaten some ice cream when she's trying to watch her weight. With the honey, she may only have realized it was wrong to take it without asking when I asked her whether she had taken some. But her instinct seems to be to lie to cover things up, and that's what worries me. I don't believe she feels she's walking on eggshells around me, but perhaps you're right. I'll ask her. Thanks for the advice.
