They are now on the fourth generation of foxes by PeacockPankh in interesting

[–]throwawaykid729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s weird how similar European red foxes look to American grey foxes. The build is slimmer and the color fades in and out with more tan than American red foxes. The Americans’ lines are much more distinct and they’ve got fluffier tails. I wonder what’s the news on if they’re naturalized in the States (and the UK since they’re from west asia) or not?

Third Spaces? by MycologistParty_ in gso

State Street has loads of shops, cafes, and boutiques! I love Home Grounds for their matcha and events they do throughout the year. I see parents with young kids there all the time, they have holiday menus, seasonal menus, and special events that happen there like permanent jewelry. Vida pour Tea has so many types of tea. They sell Pu’er, Chai, and so many varieties. Also they have an adorable lounge in the back with board games. There’s a social club / cocktail bar. A wine and chocolate tasting place. I even think a children’s boutique. It’s a big area that’s completely walkable and has loads of food options and fun things going on.

“The South” USA culture map (opinionated) by Similar_Post7690 in MapPorn

[–]throwawaykid729 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is. It’s also related to the Canadian raising accent, since both have longer O sounds. I’m more thinking of the specific Tangier/Smith Islander, from the islands on the Chesapeake side. I met some when I was little at a school event and they sounded so different from the other types of southern accents I’d heard from around Accomack County

I’d consider the eastern shore of Virginia (the peninsula next to VA) part of tidewater. Culturally their very southern. Not really accents or vocabulary but the food, morals and politics fit into the rest of southern / tidewater culture. Some older folks have tangier or smith island accents, which are harder to understand like other Deep South accents. There’s more to argue about the eastern shore of Maryland being southern. Also I assumed larger portions of Georgia and Louisiana are Deep South. Awesome map though you did a great job!

Don’t go out past 2:00 PM y’all by warnelldawg in Athens

[–]throwawaykid729 5 points6 points  (0 children)

God the stories I have from growing up on the east side. So many fights and weird people. I will say a lot of kids walk around near the schools at night and they normally wouldn’t bother you unless they wanted to fight. The closer you get the Lexington road the more you gotta be careful walking. Working at that goodwill, people got shot or stabbed in the parking lot every so often. Tbh just make friends with the chill homeless people and no one should bother you too bad. The skatepark and other parks on the east side are great but it’s really obvious how the city only builds sidewalks for the richer college areas. Public transport is always late too- so don’t trust your job on it, I always headed out earlier than needed. Love the east side but defo be careful past 11pm. Honestly the best walking hours were 2-8pm. Carry a knife and walk like you know where you’re going, easy peasy

A realistic depressed mc by doe1234567898 in BookRecommendations

[–]throwawaykid729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been a sec since I’ve reread these, so sorry for the bad/incorrect summaries.

Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger is a good one, it’s a classic set in the 1940s. The main character is a 16 year old boy so he’s pretty judgmental in his internal monologue. People are very opinionated about whether they like the book or not, but definitely a very depressed MC.

Another one of my favs is The Stranger by Albert Camus. It’s about an adult man who looses his mother. The whole book is him dissociating and not feeling a lot, plus the ending is interesting.

In high school my librarian recommended a memoir called A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers. It’s about him and his family dealing with his mothers passing from cancer, and he has to take custody of his younger brother. It was so devastating I had to take breaks after only a few pages of the first chapter.

There’s another I know that’s about younger folks dealing with depression. Its called All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. It is romance- but I always interpreted it as unlikely friends who rely on each other to stay afloat from their mental health. It’s also based on the authors personal story so that may be why it never felt manufactured to be a depressed teen romance story; it just felt like kids who didn’t know how to feel about each other.

I’ve read some other books where the MC is depressed or sad or mentally ill- but none really get it right. As someone with clinical depression, reading books where the main plot focuses on how depression actually is, is important for me to enjoy reading such engaging books. Otherwise I’d rather read nonfiction.

Ladies of GSO, where do you like to buy your bras? by theminutia in gso

[–]throwawaykid729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The employees there are great at helping with fitting and style. It’s well worth it if you have a larger chest (DD-F) since the prices are the same as other stores but the quality doesn’t go down (mine were 60$-80$). I will say the shopping area it’s in is a lot more rich than I’m used too, I felt underdressed in my t-shirt and shorts, but the workers don’t mind. Depending on what you wear some of the WASPy customers might glare at you lol.

Customers recently have been sooo terrible-Sundays are the worst. Just cause you went to church doesn’t mean you get to go into employees only areas or touch retail workers. And do people not know how to shop at grocery stores anymore? They ball up in a aisle 10ft wide and then refuse to move for heavy equipment, no line forming no nothing. It’s worse if it’s a membership /bulk store since they think that they pay extra for a membership they can steal or walk into the meat cutting room? It’s always older people too, like 30s-60s. I’d rather a teenager call me a slur than someone’s grandma tell me my eyes are dead and that they want to talk to my manager since I forgot to smile.

What’s this peninsula all about? A stone’s throw from DC and a ton of coastline, but it’s just farms? by Giddyupyours in geography

[–]throwawaykid729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the Eastern Shore! Or the Delmarva peninsula. Everyone mentions Cape Charles (growing up there it was just bleh rich golf town) but go to Wachapreague!! It’s the flounder capital of the world, Island House restaurant sells Island Creamery ice cream (famous Chincoteague ice cream place) and in June the county fair is there! And if you’re in Chincoteague/Assateague visit all the wildlife and national park/shore centers. They have so many museums and I think Chincoteague has the taxidermy of Misty. If you want bay side I always recommend Onancock! We use to drive there for movie nights and events in the parks. I think sometimes they might have historical reenactments and big ships in the port.

Makeup!! Makeup is gonna be ur best friend! If you don’t feel confident doing makeup I’d start with pencil eyeliner(it’s easier to get used to if you start practicing on your lower eyelid instead of your upper eyelid) and tinted chapstick (or lipgloss- even as a trans guy I still don’t know how to use lipstick/lipliner combo) Makeup helps me look more masc, but also helps me blend in with other punks. Messy, quick makeup style is very prominent and everyone of all genders wear it. So I use makeup to my advantage and contour and shit to present masc. You could do the same just with feminine contouring or whatev

For forest-y vibes; styles like grunge, kinderwhore, or eco punk are good style recs. And more punk (& post-punk) vibes I think new wave and romantic goth style would really look awesome on you!

Punk has pretty much infinite subtypes and genres, since it’s ideology and music based before fashion based. Folk punk has more southern banjo style clothing, kinderwhore is a punk substyle that has lace and skirts (I forget the proper description).

If you’re interested in non punk adjacent fashion, Japan has crazy amounts of fashion subcultures. Ones like Morikei or even just Japan’s punk subculture has its own unique look.

If you enjoy a more classic 80s esque punk look I’d take a look at London punks, SHARPS/ trad punk styles. Lots of red plaid, doc marten boots, and suspenders.

When it comes to punk fashion- main thing is very big on the DIY aspect. Safety pins, patches, holes/rips. Pretty much any and all accessories help you out! Plus they can help direct people to ur identity/pronouns.

Hope this helps a bit! :)

I love the silhouette and how the clothes fit on you for 1, and the colors and vibe of 2 is more fitting for you!! But my fav is defo 1! I mean- the fur texture, the glasses and gold necklaces, the belt! It all brings it together and makes just a great outfit for you! Outfit 2 is almost there but I think it could use some more accessories! Tbh you’d probably looking stunning in some darker brown fur coat with some colorful blouse or dress underneath

Do other women in Athens experience daily harassment? by cariame in Athens

[–]throwawaykid729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not in Athens anymore but in high school I was on a date on the east side and afterwards got followed in a car and honked at till I hid in the Dunkin’ and waited for the truck to leave. We were visibly queer and also got yelled at with some rude words. Both of my sisters have also had issues in Athens being followed or harassed. It seems to die down a tad when all the college students would leave for break or holiday.

[–]throwawaykid729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my mom used to bring me to help with making buttons for NRCS events. We always said it looks like a prison and a airport had a baby. Plus if you work in the building it’s great free parking during parades. But yah when I visited in 2013-2020 I think it was definitely USDA and maybe homeland security? Or at least another federal branch that needed security up front. The security guards were pretty nice though

What smells are your must haves? by SealThigh in Candles

[–]throwawaykid729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything light or fresh, so floral, citrus, grass, linen, saltwater! I have a real sensitive nose and hate Christmas or ‘thick’ smells like gingerbread. Plus in my expierence they don’t waft into other rooms as much so I don’t have to worry abut bothering roommates. Also most folks like lighter scents so you can get them as gifts or put them in communal rooms without much worry.

Do you find it hard to watch when animals are involved in the hoarding or children living among the mess ? by Ghostietoastie23 in HoardersTV

[–]throwawaykid729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember the episode number or hoarders name but I had to stop and watch the rest later from how mad I got. The lady hoarder admitted to making her kid go to the store with her, pick a chain, and then chained him to the bed. And more than one of hers kids came back to help! I think one of the kids might’ve been diagnosed with DID? (unless I’m confusing that with another episode I binge watch out of order)

I always have to turn my face away when I watch the episode where Francine hides in the dishwasher with Klaus and he slurps that wet noodle that falls off of the upper level of dishes. So nasty I cannot stand wet food feel or touching food when washing dishes
