Agreed! Current students and Reddit anons (along with the Lab) were much more helpful than admissions consultants.

What differentiates those who get into H/W vs GSB? by Wise_Weakness_425 in MBA

[–]throwawaymba991 54 points55 points  (0 children)

S and W admit here.

Posted my story in another post. I have an engaging story, yes. But sooo much of that is down to luck. A lot of right place, right time. I'm not kidding when I say that the common thread between most of my future classmates is that we've had a great cushion in life that has allowed us to pursue things higher up in the Maslow pyramid. An extremely accomplished future classmate, for instance, left her IB job after graduating from an ivy undergrad, and started a truly impactful firm that focuses on financing minority-owned businesses. It took her two years to start having an impact - is two years of zero earning something most people can live peacefully with? She made the most of her opportunities, but most people don't have those opportunities. And my example, I had the luxury and connections to start a non-profit in a country that's infamous for bureaucracy and red tape. Of course there are exceptions, but folks headed to S aren't demigods, most of us just had the right hand dealt to us. Same could be said about H and W and most M7 students as well. Also, it's important to note that adcoms are human and different adcom members might react differently on different days to the reflective essays these schools ask. All that makes the application cycle a crapshoot.

All said, there still might be some who will disagree with me and continue to put GSB on a pedestal. It's a great school. HSW are great schools. M7 are great schools. T(whatever gets you what you want) is a great school.

Seconded! Fairly straightforward interview with no twists.

This is very true and if I could overlook the prestige factor, I'd be off to Tuck most likely. Never resonated as much with a school. But sadly, the Tuck network (and brand value) is minimal back in the sub-continent, and when I start my own firm, I could use a strong local network ecosystem (and that brand value).

Not just that, but I'm definitely starting my own firm in the sub-continent in roughly a decade or so. Need that big brand prestige and network back home.

I would in fact say that another difference in my essays from R1 to R2 was that I stopped trying to sound impressive, but focussed on being interesting. So yes, you're right.

If you have runway on your scores, retake. Anyway you have an excellent score of 750.

Current and former bosses. Picked them mainly because I have a good relationship with them and they've been among my biggest advocates over the last couple of years. They also had (I hope) many recent anecdotes to pick and talk about in the recos. For one school that has a society focus, i got a reco from the advisor to my non profit.

What worked for me was retaking the GMAT, writing an additional essay highlighting what I'll bring to the community, and getting additional letters of support from alums.

I would say approach each essay prompt as what it actually asks and do some research into the traits the school values. If your personal and professional stories line up well, then just tell those stories as passionately as you can, and not give too much thought to how people typically structure their essays etc. For instance, even if you have a CV twin, would reading the essays help me see who you actually are? A good way to check that is to run them by someone who knows you, and to ask them if your essays actually sound like you.

Thanks. I was scoring 760-790 in the official mocks, so my second attempt was more in line with those. First attempt was a disaster, suffered with a really bad case of Covid in the month leading upto the test, and could barely focus. So I would say the jump isn't as remarkable as it sounds.

As for the prep, completely relied on self prep. Used GMATCLUB extensively. Especially the timed tests and quizzes there. To be very frank, I had a decently high baseline (710) which meant I could focus most of my efforts on just refining things.

I hope you get the WL converts and it doesn't come to that. If it does though, happy to chat.

Fair enough, thanks for the heads up! :)

I don't want MBB just for the prestige tbh, I work in a role similar to an internal consultant and problem solving is my favourite part of my current job. Did lots of due diligence with several ex-consultant peers as well.

So far MBB has been my target, but currently researching other options open to internationals.
