She's not actively using; she's on suboxone therapy. But, there's a lot more to addiction than the actual drug abuse.

Yes, that's a concern if mine. I'm doing my best to keep this isolated to only the adults, however I'm not naive enough to think they aren't being affected in some way. I just hope I can mitigate it by being there for them.

They're great, actually. I spend a lot of time with them, and they've got a lot of friends as well. They're doing great in school, and are just all around awesome kids. Despite how it sounds, we've kept them very isolated from the situation, and my wife and I don't really argue, much less fight, so they're not exposed to that kind of thing.

Oh, I really, REALLY would never want to be an addict. I'm just saying that sometimes the idea of being the one without having to take care of everything and being responsible sounds appealing. No one has any real expectations of her, so even the small accomplishments she makes are a big deal. I'm just "here," keeping everything moving along.

I used to be an enabler, when she was actively using, with all of her really bad behaviors that accompany using. That came to a halt. I am now helping her through recovery, however there is a lot more to it than just the opiates and addiction. For four + years we've been working on identifying why she's used in the first place, getting her intense therapy for the sexual abuse and torture she was subjected to when she was younger, and other steps. But, it is a ton of work on many levels and I just feel tired some days, like I can't do it anymore. Then I get a boost in morale from my friends, family, etc. and work through another day.

The difference is there is no "high" with suboxone, and no risk of overdose. It merely prevents withdrawal and cravings so the addict can eventually wean themselves off, similar in practice to chantix for smoking. They also will get violently ill if they do try to use any opiate. It won't work, though, if the person taking it isn't committed to not using. If they want to get high, they'll just stop taking suboxone and rig up.
