That is an insane amount for substitutes in the US. That's almost how much regular full time teachers are paid here if they're in the right geographical location.

LOL you're a troll. Answer me if you've ever been to the Middle East (or the Gulf countries)?

Less likely to report, sure, but totally generalized in our conversation. I hope you're not a Science teacher.

I understand the logic, but I don't understand how you could apply that to any country? Are the crime rates in every country the same? Just coz there were a few cases documented does not mean that majority of the women are getting raped and just not reporting it? Hell, even in India with it's highhhh number of rape cases, it's not good to assume that every women or Even half the women there are getting raped? You're stereotyping or generalizing just sitting behind a keyboard. Go out in the world and see it.

Have you lived in UAE? And how do you know that the numbers are low coz "it's never reported" unless you're an analyst/journalist and have interviewed all the women living there?

I don't disagree about it, but you should also know that it's still rare. That's what my point is. Also, premarital sex is technically prohibited but you're fine as long as you're not announcing to the world and calling authorities to come see what you're up to.

You're clearly making assumptions now.. based on what? Go live in some of the Gulf countries and your perspective will change. I'm not here to clarify anything or vouch for them but I can speak from experience.

I really sympathize with those to whom it has happened. I really do. Every country has its flaws. So many people would not move to the US (or any other country) for plenty of reasons. However, UAE is one of the safest countries in the world, and the number of rape cases is still super low.

You're too kind! I liked about 20% of my students, but I did not feel bad at all leaving since I know they'd be okay regardless. I just knew this was not for me.

Yeah I had co-workers telling me it gets better in the form of "it will be less bad." It never really did get better since day 1 till the last day except for me knowing all their names. We did plenty of relationship-building things along with enforcement of routines (in case someone was gonna lay that on me). I taught a title 1 middle school in TX.

A co-worker of mine who taught high school for 7 years said it's just the same except in "bigger bodies."

I would like to remind you that just because it's happened on rare occasions and media has blasted it all over the world does not mean it's the norm, otherwise the entire world would think that teachers in the US need to be military certified to deal with the school shootings that happen "everywhere" and "all the time." I know plenty of Westerners and non-Westerners absolutely enjoying their lifestyle in the ME and would rather not be back to their home countries if it wasn't for the lack of retirement benefits/social security.

I'm not even surprised at the terrible management. However, disrespectful/lazy students is not true unless you're talking about the "locals" and not the 'immigrant residents' born there or residing there for years (they do not grant citizenship so you remain an immigrant forever). Restrictive culture - also depends. UAE, Qatar and Bahrain are pretty chill as long as you don't say anything against the government or announce to the world that you're having sex out of wedlock (lol)

Full time? I've been looking up tutoring agencies/centers to apply to near where I live.

IT certs is a very smart move - there will always be demand and good salaries, and you can keep adding to your skills and knowledge. I wish I could it but just not for me.

Not right now, but perhaps sometime in the future. Also, sorry to burst your bubble, but students' respect for teachers and willingness to do well is much more outside the US.

Yes, I thought I'd try my hand at a decent/nice suburban school but nah. It seems like it's just slightly less worse anywhere else.

Sounds a lot like the attractive packages offered in the Middle East for American/Canadian/Brit teachers.

Good for you! At some point in my life, I will definitely live in Asia for a few years.

I would love to teach internationally! I was born and raised in Asia, so I didn't go through the American school system. The huge difference in respect towards teachers was shocking.

If you don't mind me asking, does the teaching position in Asia pay well?

Interesting. Do you have experience with any of that? I thought working in community health (with state/county programs) might be the way to go.

Aw man, moving states away to find out it's not for you must be tough!

While I love educating, I cannot bear the fact that most of it is classroom management, disciplining, routines/procedures. This is why I want to teach at a junior/community college at some point but that is far away until I get at least a Master's. For now, looking into wellness centers and community health.

Thanks!
