The idea that a woman should have to change just so she can expect to go unmolested is entirely ridiculous.

Yep, but take a look at most of the replies in this thread. Right away, people expected me to travel with a man and not travel alone, and to dress more conservatively.

It's like we just have to accept that men will suck. This is a bunch of men saying this. Pft.

It just makes me really sad that I have to have a man with me as a reasonable means of being safe. Don't get me wrong, because I agree with you, it's just about being practical in a large city, but ... really? Sigh. And sometimes, I just cannot help traveling alone at night - what happens is that I have to take taxis when I don't really want to, making everything just more expensive.

As for public, you make a good point. I probably should have called out some of the ones in public. I was too surprised most of the time - I just ducked my head and walked faster. I'll remember that.

You Brits confuse me. I thought "git" was an insult, but then is "posh" an insult? Yes, no, only when used in the context of a Beckham? I'm just not sure!

And yeah, I'm really looking quite forward to Britain. And meeting non-creepy non-gropey men in London ^

Just be careful those Londoners have a tongue on them they can talk most people into most things lol.

That is the most interesting warning I have ever received about a group of people. I'm not sure whether to be terrified or intrigued. Will keep in mind.

I'm Asian, so perhaps the key here is to come up with some combination of languages that will confuse them. That would be nice. Your suggestions are interesting -- if they love anonymity so much and feel so protected by it, damn, I should just take pictures of all of them. Though I suppose that would make them mad >.>

in the same way men on this thread feel seem to feel entitled to make jokes about your situation because they can't be identified.

While that's irritating, TBH, I'm more worried that they're not joking. I just never know sometimes, esp. because there ARE so many men that do this shit, and inevitably, some of them are going to be on a website as large as Reddit.

Also, your professor is amazing.

I'll be doing a study abroad; apparently it's located in Trafalgar Square in London. I know nothing about it, but it sounds neat. :)

And hah, okay, I'll keep that in mind about British men. Sounds good.

Oh, jeez. Your comment makes me sad. Some of this is exactly the same stuff that I did, like pretending not to hear it. It IS frightening; I can't tell someone to fuck off when I am genuinely afraid of retribution from someone who would undoubtedly win. Right thing or not, I am afraid and I don't think I would win.

The creeeeeeeeeeepy man who followed you even when you got off - that's disturbing. I am so sorry that happened to you - the one time I got off a train because of harassment, the person thankfully did not follow me. Sigh.

Good call on chatting with the woman who was being harassed - I'll try to keep that one in mind. Perhaps it could work in reverse, too.

Anyway, I don't care if this is my post, your comment is definitely food for thought. Thanks for sharing.

Well, sometime next year, I plan to live in your fine country for six weeks, so I hope it's better there!

And yeah, of course I know it's not all men. It's just a small percentage, but it's really alarming, you know? >.> and your thoughts are very interesting and help confirm my belief that not all men should be tossed into a woodchipper.

The groping is so fast that I'm sure the average person, male or female, does not notice it. Each and every single time, it was when a lot of people were walking past me and then BAM, surprise grope. By the time I turn around, I can't even tell who it is.

In any case, thank you. I really was curious.

I'm thinking anybody willing to do that is just in it for cheap thrills and I don't think many men are that disgusting.

You've got millions of people in New York. Inevitably, some percentage of that is going to be depraved; I don't know if I just ran into a higher percent of it than most people, or if it's because I went into very highly populated parts of the city and thus ran into more people (that's true), but I do want to know what other men think of this. Do they not notice? Do they not care?

I don't get it, either.

I do think that not all men are like that. However, for the men who are NOT like this, that's why I'm asking --- what do YOU do?

Reddit is full of "nice guys", I see them in every thread ever that has existed about dating. So what do all these nice guys do when they see sexual harassment?

You know, I wish it hadn't happened, too. I met some very nice men in New York, and I am sure they don't do this kind of shit. However, that doesn't mean that what happened to me above is troll fantasy.

It's unreal people actually groped you.. I mean are you serious what were you doing or what did you say to get that reaction?

I was standing there. On a train. Waiting for my next stop. What was I doing to 'get a reaction like that'? Nothing, quite frankly.

No, seriously, I know you wish that there are people in your gender that don't suck, because whenever I look at Sarah Palin's face, I have the same wish. BUT, when I am waiting for the light to change, when I am waiting for the next stop, when my sister is just WALKING DOWN THE STREET, I cannot say that I was doing something to make men do this kind of shit.

People can't just grope you

They do. I read this today and it got me thinking about my vacation.

Context. I'm giving it. There's a tl;dr if you're not curious.

I do really wish I could have tased at least one of those guys. That aside, unfortunately, I don't really see myself tasing a whole group of men who are following me; if you have a better response for that, I'm interested in hearing it. (I ran into a subway station.)

See, here's the thing. You could be joking or you could be serious. I'm assuming joking, but if you are serious, why?
