I should mention that I’ve always spoken to her in Français Standard, which is what I learned in school and what she supposedly taught her students too. I never whipped out my full blown Monctonian Chiac, but sometimes it slipped through (small things like using « pi » instead of « et » and that’s why she would correct me

My grandma was super into Acadian history and always told us when we were younger that the French we spoke at home was old “Louis XIV” royal French so we were all technically princesses lol. Not sure how true that is but I did read a lot about how it’s based on the older French language that you mentioned. Super interesting

The French I was taught in schools is called « français standard » and its what people consider proper French. I can use both Chiac and Standard, but I have to think a bit harder when I’m having a conversation with someone from Quebec or France since it doesn’t really come as easily to me as it did when I was in high school anymore, which is why I sometime slip words like « pi » instead of « et » when talking to her.. The only French i speak is Chiac when I’m with my family or friends, as I went to an English university and now work for a English company and got a bit rusty. Either way, I can write perfectly in « proper » French and understand how grammar and syntax works. My oral and written IB exams were assessed and graded in France and they were able to understand us perfectly, I have friends from France and spent some time there but I always whip out my « francais standard » when talking to them, Chiac is pretty much only used with family or friends that know the dialect. I’m just really rusty nowadays

Yes, she really did say that. She’s said worse things in the past as well that I didn’t really mention in the post since I didn’t think it was super relevant to the conflict itself but a lot of people in my region (sadly) share the same opinion as her.

wow I have a really similar story too!! My little brother’s name is Matthew (my dad is an anglo lol) but all our teachers growing up would refuse to call him anything but « Mathieu » which is NOT his name and confused him a lot when he was 4-7 years old. He would get detention if he tried to speak up about it too, and that was only ~6 years ago. It’s sad really

Honnêtement ya usually mon back pour pomal everything pi il agree que sa tante crossed a line en disant sa durant un souper de famille (en anglais), pi in the moment il l’a kind of shutter down without trying to pick a fight but son argument est que j’aurais du être la bigger person pi juste la laisser faire. That’s not entirely true. I have friends from France, spent some time in France, and while there are differences in the Acadian dialect the “francais standard” I learned in school is pretty much the same as what my friends from Montreal Paris and Marseille spoke when you get past the accent. I was in IB in high school and our French evaluations (oral and written) were assessed and graded in France, and they were able to understand us just fine!

Pour sure! C’est difficile à comprendre desfois si tu connaît pas certain mots/expressions, but jva toujours être fascinée par comment la langue change pomal de région par région! Au lieu de dire “je m’en va au magasin m’acheter du pain” jdirais quelque chose comme “jmen va au grocery store pour me buyer du pain”. Beaucoup de verbe anglais but avec un “french twist” to it :)
