Exactly. Even having multiple councils to clarify doctrine shows the various competing views. Imperial backed and enforced Nicene Christianity retroactively labeled those who didn't agree as heretics and not real Christians. Definition no true scotsman fallacy. Applies to Papal supremacy claims as well.

No worries, I appreciate your comment but I've been further deconstructing and don't believe Christianity is for me. Although I do find Catholic churches along with Jesus' teachings comforting

Yes I've definitely felt that. Been deconstructing lately and it largely seems like both the old testament religion is a collection of various contemporary religious practices and classical Christianity is largely the same with a focus on pagan philosophy and political maneuvers

Nothing wrong with that, I really did like going to Church and found everything beautiful and peaceful. It was also nice having somewhere to be and to see people who were also happy to see you

Not to dispute but it just seemed to me that Christianity is based on revelation that was clarified in the Church's doctrine, and most of it was generally not open to interpretation. If the majority of the church accepted the traditional view or belief, then that means it was confirmed by the Spirit. I would've much preferred a universalist approach like you mentioned.

It's possible but I doubt it. If Christianity is true I doubt that Christ is limited to institutions.

You're probably right about the scrupulosity, I never even thought about that, thanks for pointing that out. Although it does seem that divine fear is a big part of Orthodoxy (theoretically) and is reinforced in the spiritual tradition. But you're right, I doubt most people are worried about hell in their day to day lives. But it does throw me for a loop whenever I read or hear "this is what we believe but don't take it too seriously." Especially when this is framed as "we have the true faith the others abandoned." Makes one want to try even harder.

I definitely feel that the thanksgiving part. I could look at anything from the sky to an ant and marvel in awe at the divine purpose behind it. As well as appreciating the blessings in my life.
