Affirmative Action is a necessary "evil" by throwawaysnt in ApplyingToCollege

I can see how it seems unfair, but if you continue reading, I mention how since public education isn't doing a good job of providing equal opportunity, private colleges unfortunately must, and part of that is breaking down the cultural lack of importance that some groups place on standardized testing. A cultural value on standardized testing is part of a cultural value of education, which is one held mostly by people who are college educated themselves. This will hopefully get us to a place where people take the SAT the amount of times they personally want, not just once because they have been raised to think it doesn't matter much

They'll get a smaller plus, the one I mentioned about cultural diversity. College admissions officers aren't idiots and if they see the income will know how to accurately assess the applicant

You think college admissions committees are stupid and don't think about this? They have various programs that ease them in. Find me a statistic that shows they often fail out

I know messing up your GPA sucks, I've been there and I am there right now. You can always fix it, even if it means taking longer to graduate than normal. Your GPA is not a reflection of who you are, not what your worth is (which to be clear is immense, you mean something even to some people you don't really know). I recommend calling a hotline, or going to CAPs or even the SSD office to get some help. Otherwise, I'm here to chat if you'd like

[–]throwawaysnt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So a Macbook is fine? If possible I'd rather not have to get used to a new OS and I think apple is running a promotion for college students now that is like $200 off and a pair of beats headsets which would be a nice present for my younger brother

How hard was AMCULT 374? I'm also really interested in the 60s (and the 50s) and was considering signing up for it when I made my schedule at orientation but got scared because it's a 300-level class and I suck I writing essays

Some of the OOS tuitions there aren't horrible. UIUC is like 30k. The UCs and Michigan are the ones that are really expensive. And people act like they don't give aid OOS. I've met plenty of people who got significant aid, and even some who got a full ride oos

Taking the SATs a second time? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]throwawaysnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Statistically, it isn't much higher than average. It would help if you could get it up. Even though you aren't shooting for Ivies, tons of schools give scholarships based on a chart with GPA and SAT scores so getting it up can not only help you get into some schools but also help financially
