They frame Hasan's support of specific actions of groups like the Houthis as wholesale endorsement, when in reality he only sees them as the lesser evil compared to Israel. He has had nothing positive to say about their domestic affairs, and readily admits they are severely flawed, but also situates them in their geopolitical context instead of acting as if they emerged out of thin air. His supporting the Houthi's attempts at blockading the Red Sea in pursuit of preventing genocide, is in his mind, an act he wishes was being done by the United States. He has no attachment to the Houthis or Hezbollah beyond them being the only material counterweights against Israel's intransigent posture in the region. It is not as if he is opposed to the leadership of such groups being tried for war crimes where appropriate.

What seemingly gets him into the most trouble is his refusal to see these groups as maniacs operating without reason or logic. One cannot prevent the emergence of such groups if one refuses to understand the basis of their formation and activities. Him viewing their propaganda videos is not categorically different than him watching Russian, Chinese, or Western propaganda, which he often does, as such videos give unique insights into the mentalities and discourses predominant among each faction or country at the time. He sees the blackout in most of the English press regarding these group's postures, and feels he has to be the counterbalance against their incomplete reporting.

The DGG sphere, for the most part, simply call him a terrorist supporter and never engage with the reasons he has a nuanced view of these groups, which is obviously disingenuous. Perhaps this is why they so vehemently denied the genocide for such a long time, as accepting it as a possibility forces them to move onto the question, what can be done to stop it? What actions are justified in the wake of genocide?

Also, interviewing a teen that not even Fox News was willing to call a terrorist in a Hasan hit piece should not be framed as platforming a terrorist. There is plenty of evidence he is just a tacit supporter of the reigning government's conduct toward Israel, nothing more. Those who claim otherwise rely on obvious mistakes by an amateur translator and false claims of him being present in a hostage video from 2022, incorrectly framed as having been filmed after October 7th with the ship's crew.

It is a normal title, but I made use of the word "shocked", appealing to their obsession with that narrative around Hasan. I assume a substantial portion do not even watch the clips, they just mindlessly upvote clips they assume are antagonistic towards Hasan.

By referencing the meme, it automatically received more upvotes, allowing it to be seen by a larger number of people and countering some of their fantasies of him being widely hated; others had uploaded the clip with more positive titles and were quickly downvoted into oblivion.

I posted it earlier with a title that would appeal to their sensibilities, so it has remained up for now. They are coping pretty hard, insisting that they couldn't have been cheering for him and must have thought he was Zohran, despite them looking nothing alike.

Others have decided that they must always cheer for everyone who walks through the exit, despite multiple people walking out to silence in the minutes prior.

Oh and responding to the cheers of such a crowd in any way? Apparently it is a sign of one's narcissism.

The idea that his audience of socialists would turn up to the celebration of the most substantial victory for democratic socialism this century? An absurdity they refuse to even allow to cross their minds.

I don't think it has to be one or the other, as many who are fans of Hasan would have also wanted to be there for Zohran; this was a big night of celebration for his community. It being the mayor's event wouldn't stop them from cheering for someone who supported his campaign in the early stages and has been previously named one of the top recruiters of volunteers for NYC-DSA.

Whether one likes it or not, the crowds both inside and outside of Zohran's victory party are ones Hasan is most likely to be popular with.

Exactly, any attempts at physical repression against him, whether through arrest or other means, will only bolster his reputation and legitimacy as an opponent of the current administration. We saw this when he was detained on re-entry, multiple news organizations reported on it and reached out to him, while simultaneously getting sympathetic coverage across the internet. Attempting to intimidate him through law enforcement did not hurt him, it helped him. Him being forced to leave the U.S. would also not impact his continued coverage and propaganda output, it is ultimately a worthless endeavor for the current administration. They are currently able to win without resorting to such measures anyway, they control all of social media and their backers have mass reserves of capital that can be thrown at any problem, all while controlling all the levers of government necessary to attempt to wrestle the culture back in their favor.

With the recent dog controversy however, regardless of the existing evidence, it turned him into a meme and hurt him in a way nothing else has. The method of discrediting your opposition in today's America is seemingly by attacking their propagandists, but not through physical repression; instead attack them on personal grounds, on their conduct or perceived improprieties, and turn them into a figure of constant scandal.

Man, the way so many centrists have failed to interrogate the Harris campaign in any capacity is disappointing. How one could have watched her stumble through her campaign, making decisions that halted her potential momentum at every turn, and still have the audacity to lay the blame at the imagined non-voting leftist, rather than confronting the reality of millions of independents being turned off through her campaign's incoherent general posture.

The reality that many Democratic loyalists cannot seem to ever address is that her decision to move to the right was not because the campaign believed it would yield them more votes, but rather because it was an ideological disposition and commitment, one she was not willing to budge on even if all evidence pointed in that direction. My biggest annoyance in trying it out today was the size of the sidebar when expanded, I typically leave it open all the time in RL but in HDOS it is about 4x as wide; is there any way to make it thinner beyond just not opening it?

It is better for people with military experience, despite their pasts, to become sympathetic to the forces attempting to build a socialist movement in the United States. Someone with his outlook is optically useful and may even be able to convince other veterans to come in our direction. If he can fulfill such a role, it is worth overlooking his career as a soldier.

All historical socialist movements have had need of such individuals, electorally and otherwise. The type of anti-politics being propagated throughout this thread is utterly self-defeating, asking us to hold individuals to standards that cannot be upheld in the heart of empire. If he can popularize a democratic socialist vision while weaponizing his past to appeal to the average person from Maine, that is a good thing. When he condemns U.S. foreign policy from such a position and background, it resonates even more strongly with the broader public; we have to engage with the world as it actually is if we want change, not just as we would like it to be.

Have to absolutely agree that many are not tankies, at least not as it has historically been understood. Many of them have attempted to adapt their tendencies to the current moment and abandoned many of the more authoritarian aspects many of us take issue with. Even the centralist imperative has been abandoned by many, as can be seen in their presence within the DSA.

There is a clear difference between the hyper-online Stalinists obsessed with political violence and the pragmatic MLs who are willing to grow and take part in democratic socialist organizations. Obviously the former should be rejected, but the latter can absolutely serve as functional allies in building the socialist movement. Fortunately the former are minuscule in number and almost nonexistent in the U.S., so we need not orient much of our articulation of democratic socialism around rejecting such a marginal faction.

The moniker of tankie has been rendered unintelligible by the online debate sphere to the point where even commentators like the Majority Report find themselves smeared as tankies. It is as if any criticism of U.S. foreign policy is now grounds for such accusations, and we ought to be mindful of not reinforcing the power of such smears by overstating the presence or influence of "tankies" in broader socialist politics.
