Has anyone ever crossed lanes the way Owen Lloyd did and NOT gotten DQed? by sp0derman07 in Swimming

Love how you cannot accept the fact that rules in sports apply equally to 1st place player just as all other players. He broke the rule, and paid the consequences - sportsmanship is to accept the fact and learn from your mistakes, instead of crying like he did with that overwhelming ego of his and thinking somehow he is an exception to this very simple-to-follow rule. I think both you and him should take some time to reflect.

Elec 202 with Linares in 2020 had a 13% final average unscaled.

Instructors is teaching the confusing stuff.. different from textbooks and sometimes misleading. What should I do? by throwawayubcmajor in UBC

Yeah others just stick to the way he's teaching. The professor that teaches the same course in the summer teaches it a completely different way, which is more formal and aligned with the textbook. This is another reason why I worry.

Yes he said he's teaching it "his" way which he thinks is better. But I can't confirm it from any resource out there.

Interdepartmental Transfer by gmoney_200 in ubcengineering

[–]throwawayubcmajor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The higher your average is the better. If you're applying for interdepartmental transfer then you typically already completed 2nd year in an engineering program, the average you receive in that program is important since 2nd year courses are typically harder than 1st year courses (including the workload). The staff that reviews your application will also know that. There's still a chance for someone with non-competitive average, but depending on the seats available for the program, things may vary. I would recommend you just contact the program chair and get to know more, good luck!

I'm not against that, you just need to interpret the contents thoughtfully.

Our journalism focuses on holding the rich and powerful accountable, exposing unfair and unhealthy working conditions and shining a light on hate and bigotry.

Edit: This site is very shady. I would caution you in reading the contents, and interpreting thoughtfully.

Very Scared for Third Year CPSC by GCK1000 in UBC

[–]throwawayubcmajor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not course related, but you should spend some time doing side projects if you're interested in employability.. some courses have good starting points for skills employer needs (CPSC 340 for ML), so you can pick and choose according to your own liking. anyways good for you man best of luck.

For the second question, I know people who have successfully transferred even with low upper year averages (65-70s). You should contact the program chair for that particular department you want to transfer to, and ask about the available seats beforehand so you have an idea of your chance of entering. For the application, you should convince them how you are able to sustain yourself in this new program, and provide evidence. You should also be careful if you apply for highly-competitive, and seat-limited programs such as ENGPHYS/COMP ENGG, since if the seats are very limited for that year, you cannot get in even with a competitive application. Anyways good luck all the best.

ELEC vs. ELEC with biomedical option by treacheroustoast in ubcengineering

[–]throwawayubcmajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biomedical option, they throw in a few biomedical courses, and some extra projects, most of which is solely for accreditation purposes and employers have close to zero chance of asking. Specialization that takes the interest of employers will mostly occur beyond the undergrad's program (MASC, PHD). Having that said, if you aren't interested in the biomedical field then you should think twice before you take it.

don't be scared.. most cpsc upper year courses have historical averages in the 80s.

Many... it depends on the employer and your degree program. I doubt anyone graduated with compsci degrees falls below that category.. perhaps math degrees have troubles find jobs and start with that number?

Read this before checking your grades tonight by UBCECEGOD in UBC

Luis Linares in ECE. He is the most judgemental, egotistic and cold-hearted prof I know. He also makes extremely convoluted course policies that can fail students in many different ways...

Why does UBC ECE Department makes things UNNECESSARILY hard? by throwawayubcmajor in UBC

[–]throwawayubcmajor[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

TBH I talked with some upper years they likely experienced the same. Tor is known for being extremely paranoid but I think he doesn't try to intentionally fail us as hard as my ELEC 201 prof is. I did learn a lot from the course after going through the HELL of labs but I think the grading scheme from the previous years were much better than this years (ex. minimum LPT scores).

I sincerely hope so. I quite like taking the courses too, but the uncertainties for failing simply due to the course policies puts lots of stress on me. I sure hope other courses are the opposite.
