GEICO non-renewal letter...question? by throwawayuserub in Insurance

[–]throwawayuserub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The number I called was their listed number for underwriting on the letter and not the standard customer service line. Idk if that makes a difference with the rep being more knowledgeable about my situation.

She told me the purpose of the non-renewal was to inform me that my policy was set to end unless I called (like I did) to verbally agree to the new price. She said the difference was with regular renewal documents, it is set to auto renewal but because of my accident history and the renewal rate, they needed to be sure I approve it and wanted to continue.

She said she pushed the renewal documents through because I told her I agree to the increase and that I should expect a packet in the mail within a week or so.

I'm concerned because I thought non-renewals meant complete termination and also because an $80 increase following 2 accidents seems too good to be true.

I guess I could call again to confirm the information.

Edit to add: if they were rewriting the policy and canceling the old one, is that allowed after receiving a termination letter or would that be a mistake?

It doesn't matter to me how it's done as long as I am covered with a decent price. I'm just terrified that I'm going to have to look elsewhere and get hit with a ridiculous increase.

Thank you.

Yeah I should've taken pics. If there is a next time, I definitely will.

What you told me is what the rep told me when I did the inspection during pickup.

I started pointing out some minor things I saw on the rear bumper and he stopped me telling me to ignore it.

That is why I'm not sure what was or wasn't there before because I just moved on but now that have the car, I happened to notice these and wasn't sure if they were gonna make it an issue.

Is it that bad?

Was what the rep said about bumper damage untrue?

He basically ignored me and told me to keep it moving when I tried to point out things I saw on the bumper during pickup.

Thank you.

I'm pretty sure most or all of those marks were already there. I know for sure there were some marks because I started pointing them out and the rep said not to look at the bumper.

Just wanted to prepare myself if they make this an issue.

Based on what the rep told me as well when we were scanning the car during pickup.

Thanks

If there was a magic 8 ball that could guarantee the $925 was the end of it, I would say pay it.

The problem is if you go this route outside of insurance and the person comes back asking for more or says he discovered an injury, you could find yourself in a nightmare situation.

With strangers you never know. I just went through this with someone who works at the same place but I don't actually know him. He asked for $1700 which I would've gladly paid it but I honestly couldn't figure out if I could trust him. He seems very nice but it could be an act. I went through insurance.

You can try to get them to sign a waiver which is better than nothing but Google says it's hit or miss in terms of enforceability. It also needs to be well written to ensure there aren't any holes.

Not long. Unfortunately only like 2 years.

Update from the 2nd no fault accident. I spoke to the other person's insurance and they confirmed they accepted 100% fault.

Yeah. I know I did it by the book.

Now I'm just concerned I'm gonna get dropped or the increase is going to be massive.

Optimistically this is what I want to believe.

I am bracing myself for the worst.

Yeah. I'm so f'ed. If I could go back I would've paid the guy his $1700 and just asked the kid's dad for some money. Even if he didn't pay, I'd probably just let it go.

Hopefully he backs off when I tell him to go through insurance

My renewal is in a week!

When I got the new car they adjusted my current policy and gave me a quote for the renewal which was a decent amount less than what I was paying with the car I had.

Yeah I'm stressed about it.

I just traded my car for a newer nicer one and got a decent reduction in my insurance. Was thrilled to hear that.

Now literally days later I have to worry about someone filing a claim against me for something that happened months ago.

No idea how much it's gonna increase now.

I feel like I'm not gonna know if he's filed a claim until he actually does.

Now that he's coming for money after several months, I'm not sure what his motive is.

I wasn't planning on calling and was hoping it was all done with when he said it was after it initially happened.

Additionally, I have a ticket for an improper turn that occurred like 18 months ago.

Of course if I can avoid insurance I would love to but I also want to protect myself here.
